10 Things Every Home Should Have For Short-term Survival

1. Guns! Shotgun – most commonly a simple 12-gauge pump (20-gauge if weaker-statured people will be using it.) Pistol – If you live in a state where it’s legal to own/carry a pistol for self defense, then you should be doing it. Battle Rifle – We’re talking those mean, state-of-the art, misnamed “assault” rifles. Mine’s in .223 caliber, and I make no excuses for it. It’s accurate out to long distances, accepts a 30-round magazine, and puts out a high rate of suppressive fire. And make sure you have plenty of ammo. (We’re talking thousands of rounds. No one ever came out of a firefight saying “Darn, I wish I’d had fewer bullets!) 2. Water 3. Heat 4. Food 5. Medical supplies 6. Power and Lights 7. Communications 8. Transportation 9. Entertainment 10. God

Best of all is INFORMATION.

I have to say dittos on that – at this point in time the best thing for everyone to do is start researching and planning. Start running “What-If” scenarios through your head.

What if society begins to break down?

What if there is a nuclear terrorist attack?

What if there is an EMP attack?

What-if….

Salt!

It is very cheap, is necessary for all life, and can be used to barter.

Excellent points re the 22 gun and ammo:

The most useful gun for “long term survival” is a simple .22LR. Ammo is cheep, so you can buy years worth for a minimal investment. The .22LR is accurate, and can bring down small game that you may end up having to survive on like, rats, squirrels, birds, dogs, cats, etc. And it is still capable of stopping an intruder or at least making them turn tail if it came down to that. And the sound does not carry long distances, and keeping others from finding your location may be a matter of life and death.”

I do believe FReepers have good cause for a class action lawsuit against canoe manufacturers from all the sad stories I've read about such accidents.

Missing on the list (should be in the top 5) is cash. Do not assume that a short-term disaster scenario automatically means the breakdown of our currency system. We went without power for about a week during Hugo and cash was king.

Keep as much as you can, several hundred dollars at least, all in small bills (nobody will be making change for you).

Like guns, there are varying laws from state to state.

Would love to get one now, but cannot as I am not currently working. They are very expensive, and I am afraid they may be impossible to get at some point in the future.

(in which case, I would make one like Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of dollars)

“when you are STARVIng...YOU will eat cabbage!”

BOL!

No problem with cabbage, we both love it.

I have only two veggies I will not eat:

1. Rhubarb

second (both are interchangible)

1. Brussel sprouts

My wife has joked about if we had no food but these two items, I would have to learn to eat them. I said that I would probably starve if only Rhubarb and/or Brussel sprouts were around.

Rhubarb gives me a killer headache (I get about 1 headache every 5 years without the Rhubarb) even when I smell it. Rhubarb also makes me want to throw up with the odor and the taste.

Brussel Sprouts cause both of these problems while still on the shelves in the grocery stores or farmers markets, and I have a very strong stomach. I have never been seasick, car sick, airplane sick or any motion illness. It has been decades since I threw up, and that was a bout with food poisoning or so called GI flu.

Not harder to buy - no registration or background check, just expensive

I’m not sure you got an answer and it’s a good question.

Back in the 50s and 60s, the vast majority of electronic systems were based on electromechanical or vacuum tube technology, which will withstand a much greater EMP attack than solid-state equipment will. Any car or truck with a basic Kettering-type ignition should survive EMP fine (in the book, old pickups and classic cars are the only vehicles that are operable, along with the tube-type AM radio in a classic T-Bird).

But it’s more than just the electronics we know and use every day - now the electrical power grid is controlled by SCADA systems that are essentially networked computer systems, and think of how dependent we’ve become on computer networks - ATM machines, credit card readers at the gas pump, every cellphone tower, bank transfers, and nearly all national and international trade and commerce.

Without access to the banking network we’d be limited to cash and hard assets. When the power grid fails, the only way to get gasoline would be with manual pumps. And with most of the diesel fleet out of service due to lack of fuel and/or fried engine controllers, how would most people get food and water, not to mention sanitation and other “necessities”.

In sum, it’s the dependence of our SYSTEMS on power and communications that could be disrupted by EMP that has changed since the 50’s and 60’s.

***when you are STARVIng...YOU will eat cabbage!***

What did Paul Newman say in HOMBRE?

When you ar starving you will eat dog!
You will eat dog and fight over the bones!

My dad (serving with Patton’s Third Army) saw things in Europe in WWII that proved this point.

Civilians grabbing the waste garbage from the chow halls and devouring it like animals...

I can't believe someone from the banglist/prepper list hasn't mentioned suppressors (aka "silencers") for their .22 LRs. If you can swing it now, fill out a Form 4 and buy a suppressor. If you can go further, hook an AN/PVS 14 on it.

If you really want to wet the pants of urban zombies coming into the countryside, I hope you stored your M1919 parts kit, a lathe, a drill press (and power for it), along with 80% complete sideplate receivers.....and LOTS of ammo.

A beltfed (or several) at your retreat will make most of the zombies head for other targets.....just use the suppressed .22's until the numbers become overwhelming, and then turn to the M1919s.

Note: Don't go making machineguns unless all levels of governments are gone, unless you want to spend your family's life savings and the rest of your life in prison. Until then...pay the $200.00 transfer tax and (high priced MGs) be legal.

I forgot to add that the early nuclear test devices were not optimized for EMP - heck no one even know what EMP was back then. An EMP weapon would be optimized and detonated at an altitude that would maximize it’s impact.
