A giant marabou stork has been discovered on an island once home to human-like 'hobbits'.
Fossils of the bird were discovered on the Indonesian island of Flores, a place previously famed for the discovery of Homo floresiensis, a small hominin species closely related to modern humans.
The stork may have been capable of hunting and eating juvenile members of this hominin species, say researchers who made the discovery, though there is no direct evidence the birds did so.
The finding, reported in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, also helps explain how prehistoric wildlife adapted to living on islands.

Storks bring babies ping.
Big Bird!
It’s a dragon...
They also had wicked big eagles.
“The Eagles are coming!” from the Hobbit and The Return of the King.
that guy in the picture, doesn’t have any junk !
The islands in that area (and Australia) have a bird called the Casawari (sp?). I recall a sign that said “... raise your hands above your head to make yourself appear larger than the bird...” I thought to myself “appear”!!!???
They have been know to attack and kill humans.
No wonder they went extinct!
I hear hobbits are bitter tasting and runny, hardly a tasty morsel for storks.
But does have breasts. What's to be made of this?
Here we see possible origins of the dark side of the Jungian Big Bird archetype.
The Witch King of Angmar trained them and Sauron gave them to the wraiths to form the nine “winged Nazgul.”
"He" also has pretty big tits, maybe it's not supposed to be a guy.

I guess the stork visiting the family had a rather different meaning in those days.

If so, that's one FUGLY woman.
Where's the Austin Powers "It's a MAN, baby!" photo?
(I'm not going to mention Helen Thomas, lest someone post -that- photo...)
Vince Ricardo:I was in the jungle - the bush we called it - for approximately nine months...
Sheldon: Nine months! That must have really been something!
Vince Ricardo: It was. I saw things... They have tsetse flies down there the size of eagles...these giant flies carry off the children.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the Cassowaries are the worlds most dangerous birds, capable of dealing fatal blows. They are very unpredictable, aggressive creatures, especially if wounded or cornered. The Cassowary lives in the rain forests of Australia and New Guinea and are actually pretty shy animals if undisturbed, but if you get to close and it thinks youre a threat you could receive a bone-breaking kick...
Thanks Fred. As I recall, they have a long heel “claw” (spur??) that their primary weapon. Looks like that’s what it is trying to use in the photo.
