Where were you when you first heard "Batman Smells?" (vanity)

Posted on 12/05/2010 6:27:36 AM PST by MNDude

I'm trying to learn the origins of the playground parody "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells, Robin Laid an Egg...". What year and where did you first here this parody?

Your post is the first that I've ever heard of that.

When Ben was a pre-teen kid (the 60s) it was:

“Jingle Bells Santa smells,
Easter's on the way.
Oh what fun it is to drive in a [something something] Chevrolet”

Bart Simpsom might have popularized it, but I had heard it a LOOOONG time before the Simpsons were a segment of the Tracy Ulman Show.

But I heard it the MOST after the Bat-movie with George “Bat-nipples” Clooney.

December 1972 in an elementary school in Missouri.

It appeared that it had been making the rounds prior to this for a few years as the older kid in my elementary school were the ones who taught it to us younger kids.

My impression at the time was that it had probably originated during the run of the very popular Batman television show during the 1960’s.

Cheers

The Batmobile lost a wheel
and the Commissioner broke his leg.... Such was my version back in the day.

Mid 1960’s (I’m 50).
However Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939, so I’m guessing that kids started singing it about December 1939.

It was a big hit among my first grade class in 1967. This was the same time that the Batman TV series was at the top of the ratings.

Holy useless trivia, Batman!

Hehehe, I haven’t heard that one in years! I seem to remember I first heard the McDonald’s song around 1969.

Cheers

Late ‘60s. Most likely when the show was on TV for the first time.

"Hitler"

I remember hearing that little ditty on the school playgrounds back in the fifties. At the time (six years old) I didn't know who either Hitler or Mussolini were. But I thought it must be horrible if something that important doesn't work.

"teacher hit me with a ruler"

I think the first line of the song was "mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school." Most grade school kids are just little seditionists.

Funny, I had to sing it over again to remember our version:

Jingle bells, Batman smells
Robin laid an egg,
The Batmobile blew a wheel
and the Commissioner ran away.

BTW - I just checked with one of my younger nephews. He informs me that the song has morphed and has more verses now and days. Here is the version the kids in his school are singing:

Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg,
the Batmobile lost a wheel and the Joker got away!

Batman’s in the kitchen,
Robin’s in the hall,
Joker’s in the bathroom
peeing on the wall.

Penguin’s on the potty,
His arms too short to wipe,
Catwoman’s in the litter box
And the Riddler smokes a pipe.

O, Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg,
the Batmobile lost a wheel and the Joker got away!

Cheers

It continued when we listened to Alice Cooper.
