IRON BOWL DAY!
I grew up in Auburn. I was moved there in the fall of 1962 when my dad became a professor in the School of Engineering. We lived across from Magnolia Dormitory, right in between the Day Boarding House and Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Nixon's home. Bodie Hinton was the director of the Auburn Marching Band. Ralph Brown Draughon was the President. Jimmy Sidle was the quarterback of the team. Ralph "Shug" Jordan was the football coach. I was 7. I joined the family.
It is family. Most Auburn supporters have attended Auburn University, or their family members did, or they have worked for Auburn University. They are connected to it in some fashion. It is family.
There are tales told at family reunions. There are tales told a parties, weddings and funerals. There are tales told in a parking lot on a crisp Saturday morning, enjoying a feast which puts the White House Caterers to shame. Elegance and fun! Everyone is invited. We're family!
Today is the Day. The 2010 Iron Bowl played in Tuscaloosa. Not Birmingham. Not Birmingham anymore. We're now rotating back and forth from Jordan-Hare to Bryant-Denny. As it should have been all along.
Just to get us in the mood (as if we need encouragement!) here are some videos: Click the links!

I chose this one because my daughter is in the Tenor Sax section. It was her last year. She has now joined her mom, her dad, her aunt, and uncle and has now been joined by her two cousins. It is a family thing.
The Greatest Iron Bowl
I was there, just a freshman at Auburn and in the band. Frankly, we were getting beat up all up and down the field. It was a miserable, dismal. We were looking at another year of taunts and teasing from the other teams supporters whenever we went to K Mart or a tractor pull. The score at the end of three quarters was 16 0. Finally, with just 10 minutes left, we scored a field goal. At least we werent going home empty handed.
But, with 5:31 left it all changed. We held Bama to their own side of the field. Greg Gantt was poised to punt it safely away. But our Bill Newton blocked the ball back into Gantts face. David Lagner picked it up and sprinted into our endzone for the score. The PAT was good and the score was 16 -10. Not a win yet. We rejoiced for the score, but we were all expecting to lose anyway. Their next possession didnt go so hot
for them. Again, Gantt had to punt it away. AGAIN, the punt was blocked and AGAIN, David Lagner picked it up and went in to the end zone for the score. The PAT was good. There was no time left on the clock. Game over. 17 16. We must never forget the words of their coach when he said, prior to the game,

THE AUBURN CREED |
I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work. I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully. I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men. I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities. I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all. I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all. I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God." And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. |

To thy name we'll sing thy praise, From hearts that love so true, And pledge to thee our loyalty The ages through. Death penalty.
SMU was NEVER the same after. Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.
It didn't take long for the "haters" to come on board I see... Just hard for me to understand how conservatives can act this way.... If I saw a thread by Bama - I would just scroll on by. What's sad is that (as on other threads) once I see their names - its hard for me to feel the same once they have trashed my family!
Lovely introduction, Jemian! You've got me in the mood... I'll be back soon - I have to finish making the dip :)
If 1/10th of this it true (and I personally believe it may ALL be true), then the NCAA is going to send Auburn to Siberia for a long, long time.
I don’t notice. Don’t many restaurants laud their patrons’ interests?
Remember I told you that I was looking through my late husband’s record collection? I can not find a year on it but on the back cover, Dr. Bill Walls was the Director, Dr. Johnnie Vinson was Asst. Director and Dr. Thomas R. Smith was Choral Director. Do any of those names ring a bell? MSU cowbell, that is.
ROLL TIDE!!!
Today, War Damn Eagle.
But I’ll have to root for the Old Head Ball Coach in the SECCG.
Go Noles!
bama gonna kick that azz....cam who?
I’m going out on a limb here.....34-21 Crimson Tide. LMAO
The question is-—when Auburn loses to South Carolina do they still get to play in the BCS championship? /s
What restaurant is that? I live in HSV and did not know that. If I know the name, then I will not eat there.
Don’t tell anyone, but I have met several excellent engineers who graduated from Auburn and who work for the military. I have nothing but respect for them. I just don’t like the football team. Of course I am stuck in Big 10 country where most here hope that the both teams lose.
Who cares about them?
Now having said that . . .
Thank you. I am feeling better, but the cold is trying to come back. Ny Quil is a friend. Buy stock.
Class of 89 Giving A war Damn Eagle!
Yes, ma’am I surely do. Doc was my band director and Johnny arranged all our music. He is a great arranger. Dr. Smith indeed was the choir director, although I had no classes under him. I haven’t seen the first two in a while, but Dr. Smith sings in the civic choral here with my daughter.
