Auburn Iron Bowl 2010 WAR EAGLE!

WAR EAGLE!

Today is the day that we all wait for.  It comes once a year.  Every year.  It is all down to this.  And NOTHING else matters.

IRON BOWL DAY!

Beat Bama!

I grew up in Auburn.  I was moved there in the fall of 1962 when my dad became a professor in the School of Engineering.  We lived across from Magnolia Dormitory, right in between the Day Boarding House and Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Nixon's home.    Bodie Hinton was the director of the Auburn Marching Band.  Ralph Brown Draughon was the President.  Jimmy Sidle was the quarterback of the team.  Ralph "Shug" Jordan was the football coach.  I was 7.  I joined the family.

It is family.  Most Auburn supporters have attended Auburn University, or their family members did, or they have worked for Auburn University.  They are connected to it in some fashion.  It is family.

There are tales told at family reunions.  There are tales told a parties, weddings and funerals.  There are tales told in a parking lot on a crisp Saturday morning, enjoying  a feast which puts the White House Caterers to shame.  Elegance and fun!  Everyone is invited.  We're family!

Today is the Day.  The 2010 Iron Bowl played in Tuscaloosa.  Not Birmingham.  Not Birmingham anymore.  We're now rotating back and forth from Jordan-Hare to Bryant-Denny.  As it should have been all along.

Just to get us in the mood (as if we need encouragement!) here are some videos:  Click the links!

I chose this one because my daughter is in the Tenor Sax section. It was her last year. She has now joined her mom, her dad, her aunt, and uncle and has now been joined by her two cousins. It is a family thing.

The Greatest Iron Bowl
I was there, just a freshman at Auburn and in the band. Frankly, we were getting beat up all up and down the field. It was a miserable, dismal. We were looking at another year of taunts and teasing from the other team’s supporters whenever we went to K Mart or a tractor pull. The score at the end of three quarters was 16 – 0. Finally, with just 10 minutes left, we scored a field goal. At least we weren’t going home empty handed.
But, with 5:31 left it all changed. We held Bama to their own side of the field. Greg Gantt was poised to punt it safely away. But our Bill Newton blocked the ball back into Gantt’s face. David Lagner picked it up and sprinted into our endzone for the score. The PAT was good and the score was 16 -10. Not a win yet. We rejoiced for the score, but we were all expecting to lose anyway. Their next possession didn’t go so hot … for them. Again, Gantt had to punt it away. AGAIN, the punt was blocked and AGAIN, David Lagner picked it up and went in to the end zone for the score. The PAT was good. There was no time left on the clock. Game over. 17 – 16. We must never forget the words of their coach when he said, prior to the game,

I’d rather beat that cow college once than beat Texas 10 times.

THE AUBURN CREED
George Petrie (1945)

I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.

I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.

I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.

I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.

I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all.

I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all.

I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God."

And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it.

Our alma mater was composed by Bill Wood in 1924, with a word revision in 1960. The author of the 1960 revision was unclear for 40 years. In 2000, an Auburn professor, Dale Coleman, discovered the author to be Emma O’Rear Foy. Before you ask, yes, she was related to James Foy, former Dean of Men. Both Dean and Mrs. Foy were University of Alabama alumni who saw the error of their ways and became two of the most well-known and beloved boosters of Auburn University and its traditions. It is with sadness that I relate to you both have passed away. Dean Foy died at the age of 93 just this past October. Shortly after his death, fellow band member Denny Turner related to me this story. While we were Freshmen and Sophomores the music department was located in Hargis Hall next to Samford and also up on the Hill in the Goodwin Building (which was built as the result of a wager won when we beat Bama 17 – 16. True fact!). We would often have to haul our hinnies across campus in 10 minutes to make to one class or another. Denny would load up with flute, saxophone, books, and other necessary music paraphenalia. It was a heavy and awkward load. Quite frequently, Dean Foy would see Denny, stop his car and yell, “Hey Denny! Would you like a ride?” Denny said that to this day he never figured out how Dean Foy knew his name. Dean Foy was like that.

The Auburn Alma Mater

&nspd;&nspd; &nspd; On the rolling plains of Dixie
'Neath its sun-kissed sky,
Proudly stands our Alma Mater
Banners high.
To thy name we'll sing thy praise,
From hearts that love so true,
And pledge to thee our loyalty
The ages through.
We hail thee, Auburn, and we vow
To work for thy just fame,
And hold in memory as we do now
Thy cherished name.

Hear the student voices swelling,
Echoes strong and clear,
Adding laurels to thy fame
Enshrined so dear.
From the hollowed walls we'll part,
And bid thee sad adieu;
Thy sacred trust we'll bear with us
The ages through.
We hail thee, Auburn, and we vow
To work for thy just fame,
And hold in memory as we do now
Thy cherished name.

And certainly if the vote is determined by what happens on the field, Cam certainly wrapped up the Heisman.

I’m cheering for Arizona at the moment. I don’t know if even O losing would have them give it to us. We could win all our games and still not be awarded the top prize. It has happened before.

How could they deny a team that goes unbeaten in a Division (not even a conference), that has Bama, LSU, Arkansas and Mississippi State?

Sorry to hear that about McElroy - I saw his head hit the ground but you wonder why the helmet wouldn’t prevent a concussion..... I will pray.

On the one hand, I’d love to finally see Spurrier (the greatest Gator of them all) finally have some success at SCar.

You're right about that. Spurrier definitely put the 'gay' in Gator. :-)

Just to let you know, my wife's family are all from North Florida and are all 'Noles fans with the exception of her younger brother who actually had the audacity to wear a Gator T-shirt to our wedding rehearsal. He is that Spurrier is as much loved by Gator fans as Galen Hall is hated. As far as the SEC title game goes, I urge you to support your conference. As a Tide fan, I will be pulling for Auburn the rest of the way hoping that they bring home a fifth consecutive National Championship for the SEC. And yes, I did the same for Florida for its last two. Besides, would you rather be a jolly Tiger or a beat Cock?

Every SEC team is a threat. I never, ever, never-ever make predictions about a game. Too much can happen.

Biggest Bogus call I've seen all season.

I must admit my observation of the game when Bama went up 24-0, was that at least it appeared Auburn was doing a pretty good job against Bama’s running game, and that could provide a chance to get back into the game. Once Auburn got on the board and got some confidence it was an amazing transformation.

It seems they “transform” almost every game.

The list just got longer. AND I HATE IT! Can’t we just flip the switch at the beginning? I could use a few less gray hairs.

Biggest Bogus call I've seen all season.

Even stronger than that - the CBS commentator on with Archie Manning (sorry I don't know his name) said it was the *worst* call he had seen in 10 YEARS!! And I assume he watches a LOT of football!!

The SeeBS “commentators” were so in the bag for Bama I didn’t know whether I was listening to Rachel Madcow fawn over 0bamadinejad on MSNBC or the ballgame.

But that’s another subject.
