IRON BOWL DAY!
I grew up in Auburn. I was moved there in the fall of 1962 when my dad became a professor in the School of Engineering. We lived across from Magnolia Dormitory, right in between the Day Boarding House and Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Nixon's home. Bodie Hinton was the director of the Auburn Marching Band. Ralph Brown Draughon was the President. Jimmy Sidle was the quarterback of the team. Ralph "Shug" Jordan was the football coach. I was 7. I joined the family.
It is family. Most Auburn supporters have attended Auburn University, or their family members did, or they have worked for Auburn University. They are connected to it in some fashion. It is family.
There are tales told at family reunions. There are tales told a parties, weddings and funerals. There are tales told in a parking lot on a crisp Saturday morning, enjoying a feast which puts the White House Caterers to shame. Elegance and fun! Everyone is invited. We're family!
Today is the Day. The 2010 Iron Bowl played in Tuscaloosa. Not Birmingham. Not Birmingham anymore. We're now rotating back and forth from Jordan-Hare to Bryant-Denny. As it should have been all along.
Just to get us in the mood (as if we need encouragement!) here are some videos: Click the links!

I chose this one because my daughter is in the Tenor Sax section. It was her last year. She has now joined her mom, her dad, her aunt, and uncle and has now been joined by her two cousins. It is a family thing.
The Greatest Iron Bowl
I was there, just a freshman at Auburn and in the band. Frankly, we were getting beat up all up and down the field. It was a miserable, dismal. We were looking at another year of taunts and teasing from the other teams supporters whenever we went to K Mart or a tractor pull. The score at the end of three quarters was 16 0. Finally, with just 10 minutes left, we scored a field goal. At least we werent going home empty handed.
But, with 5:31 left it all changed. We held Bama to their own side of the field. Greg Gantt was poised to punt it safely away. But our Bill Newton blocked the ball back into Gantts face. David Lagner picked it up and sprinted into our endzone for the score. The PAT was good and the score was 16 -10. Not a win yet. We rejoiced for the score, but we were all expecting to lose anyway. Their next possession didnt go so hot
for them. Again, Gantt had to punt it away. AGAIN, the punt was blocked and AGAIN, David Lagner picked it up and went in to the end zone for the score. The PAT was good. There was no time left on the clock. Game over. 17 16. We must never forget the words of their coach when he said, prior to the game,

THE AUBURN CREED |
I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work. I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully. I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men. I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities. I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all. I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all. I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God." And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. |

To thy name we'll sing thy praise, From hearts that love so true, And pledge to thee our loyalty The ages through. We hail thee, Auburn, and we vow To work for thy just fame, And hold in memory as we do now Thy cherished name. Hear the student voices swelling, |
Thank you. I think most decent Tide fans will pull for Auburn from here on out for that very reason.
If shoes were switched, I would be pulling for Bama too.
Unfortunately, I know of a handful of insecure idividuals whose have to live vicariously through the Tide to make themselves feel better. And they have no connection to the University whatsoever. They still will not pull for Auburn.
Hi JT. Great 2nd half.
Mr. del says that the first quarter was for the benefit of keeping the game interesting.
I knew that was not the Auburn Tigers that I had previously seen this season.
I just got here and have to catch up but I agree with you. I wouldn’t think of trashing a Bama thread. I’d scroll right on by. Wonder why others don’t feel the same???
Anyway, WAR EAGLE!!! I am exhausted! WHAT A GAME!!
So as a Gator, who do I root for.
Our former Quarterback vs Our former Coach.
On the one hand, I’d love to finally see Spurrier (the greatest Gator of them all) finally have some success at SCar.
But then again I want the SEC Championship streak to continue which means Auburn wins. (I’m not worried about the whole Cam situation until some real facts come out, for now I assume Auburn and Cam are clean)
So the bottom line, I hope it’s a good game, and let the chips fall.
Yep, as I said when it was 21-0, Auburn had Bama right where they wanted them. ;)
Congratulations. Your team played fantastic. You knew what to attack and you totally wiped us out that first half. We were outplayed up and down the field. Thank you for the good wishes and we hope to do you proud.
Me, too. I may go to EAMC later tonight. I’m such a hypochondriac.
I did throw one for you. I throw like girl. LOL!
Tomorrow or late tonight I’ll post Toomer’s pictures. It was a happy crowd.
That is my opinion. I don't know what went on. But we're family. I stand by my family.
Ohhh... thanks so much - I just Facebooked my old Auburn “roomies” and we were all wishing we lived close enough to drive to Toomer’s Corner! I know everyone was elated! Now you probably need to take Nyquil and go to bed early :)
I’m waiting to see if Arizona will be Oregon.
And after the game I went down to Toomer's Corner and I CELEBRATED EXCESSIVELY!
You my dear, are a prophet! (and a good sport, too!)
Oh, me, too. It just exhausts me emotionally ..... what a game, though! I loved every minute.... even while biting my nails. War Eagle!!!
Isn't that the truth? The worst "fans" never went to Alabama but can be so nasty. Most real fans are good folks like we are ;)
There was a vicious thread a few days ago - people here on FR were *so* hateful about Auburn and Cam Newton. If I weren't such a Southern lady... I'd go look them up and send them a "na - na - na- boo - boo" message".... but of course that wouldn't be polite!
This might be enough to get us some more first place votes, the BCS will be hard pressed not to give AU the top position now.
I won't tell... smile.
