control investigation Comments 20 Tuesday, Nov 23 2010, 8:06 am WSOC CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Pictures of animals holding knives and cigarettes have prompted an investigation of employees at Mecklenburg County Animal Care and Control.
In an e-mail to city leaders, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe said his department had been investigating the "inappropriate" pictures since August.
One picture showed a cat, apparently sedated, with a cigarette in its mouth and a knife in its paws.
Another showed a cat with a pen in its mouth.
One showed a ferret that's missing fur, with a caption that read "someone thought it would be funny to Nair" the animal.
A whistleblower alerted a website that employees at the animal shelter had posted the pictures on Facebook.
Monroe said a review board was formed last week to determine what will happen to the employees.
"The disciplinary action will range from termination to suspension without pay for employees involved in the inappropriate acts," Monroe wrote in his e-mail.
Charlotte city leaders found out about the investigation on Monday.
"It sounds horrific from what I've read on the website," City Councilman Warren Cooksey said. "I'm looking forward to hearing from CMPD what the result of their disciplinary action is."
It's unclear when those results will be available.
A spokeswoman for Animal Care and Control said she could not comment.

That picture is flipping hilarious.
LOL ..
It's gotta be caturday somewhere...
Gone Fishin' on the Feliner ...
PETA would, though.
Obviously some little rat-fink martinet decided that those four pictures were so outrageous that the perpetrators should be hanged, drawn, and quartered.
One of the comments was particularly noteworthy. lovetehdogs said:
Huh? Exactly how was an animal harmed?
I'd like to go back to the days of common sense...their boss should have said "wth are you doing? knock it off" and everyone would have went on their merry way. But now we have police involved and an "investigation" and "whistle blowers" and someone is going to call for "hearings" and jail time, for sometihng that isn't illegal and didn't harm anyone or anything.
Granted, if the "pen in the mouth" was actually harming the animal, or if it really was Nair'ed, then something should be done. But if it's just a case of vet techs taking stupid pictures then people need to straighten out the priorities of what concerns them on a day-to-day basis.
Does that website show the pics?? I couldn’t find them....
Why is that GOOD? You consider bonzai cat good? I’d like to shove you in a jar and close the lid....
Agreed. Much ado about nothing.
What color is the sky on your planet? The Bonzai cat site would be disturbing if it were real. (Major hint - IT'S NOT.)
The website has been thoroughly debunked by Snopes.com and the Humane Society of the United States, among other prominent organizations.Wikipedia article
I know it’s a myth...but’s still disturbing....and you brought it up to keep it alive and to promote what is someone’s sick mind. You said it was good.
