My poor sister had the perfect wedding planned. The whole month of May that year was as beautiful, weather-wise, as could be. But on the 21st, her wedding day, a violent thunderstorm hit. The lightening was bright, often, and very scary. My sister and her 6 bridesmaids, of which I was one, had to walk under big golf umbrellas to get in and out of the limos to get in the church.

But for some reason, we waited a long time in the back foyer of the church before the wedding got started. We found out why. The power had been knocked out and there were no lights in the church. Even though this was an afternoon wedding, the church was quite dark. Candles were lit, and that made it a true “candlelight ceremony”.

Unfortunately, the organ ran on electricity and was, therefore, not working. So the organ player, an elderly gentleman, sang the Ave Maria for the wedding party to march down the aisle, The church is one of the largest in the South, and has quite a long aisle. There were 6 bridesmaids, and I was the matron of honor, so I walked last before the bride. The old man asked me to please wait a minute before proceeding because he was out of breath from singing so long.

The priest read the vows and the liturgical passages by a flashllight held by the best man. That was 22 years ago and they are still happily married.

“It is supposed to be a celebration of the joining of man and wife, and the guests are there to pledge their support of that union.”

You’re right, of course. But you still have to have something nice to wear, and if their weddings were scheduled for this weekend, finding another dress that fits reasonably well is a bit of a challenge, with all the other last minute things that you must do before a wedding. And suppose you don’t have any money left for another dress? Or you are, say, a little bit on the heavy side, and finding a reasonably well-fitting dress is difficult at best? I can see why that would be a downer before a wedding. My husband and I were madly in love and were having a simple, but elegant, wedding. If my dress had burned up at the last minute, I would have been very upset.

I went to the wedding of a high school friend, and took my mom (instead of my husband) because she lived in the area. After a while of drinking champagne, but not finding much food, we wandered outside so Mom could smoke and found a number of amusing people in the same predicament. We left before either of us was too drunk to drive home, having never found any food worth mentioning.

When I got married, my Dad said, “Have plenty of food!” so we did.

Hell, just let em go to the justice and get hitched in their everyday clothes and skip the hoopla. Marriage probably won’t last ten years anyway

Sadly, you’re probably right. When my daughter got married almost 13 years ago, she wanted a beautiful dress with a long train and lots of beading. I know how to sew, so I wanted to make the dress for her. It took me 6 months, but finished it two days before her wedding. The satin dress had a 5 ft. train and I hand-beaded 20,000 beads and rhinestones. (I know this because of the empty bags which were labelled with the amounts of beads in each). Princess Diana’s dress couldn’t hold a candle to it(speaking of fire). It was a labor of love for my only daughter. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of sewing on that dress.

The marriage lasted 5 years and the dress hangs in my closet today as she picks out her dress for her 2nd wedding next year.

What a bunch of whiners!
Mr Legs and I were married by a Justice of the Peace; We drove their during his lunch hour, he was wearing his Marine Corps BDUs, and I was wearing a T-shirt with a not-quite-obscene logo on it. He was so nervous he said “My AWFULLY wedded wife”.

Five kids later, we’re coming up on our ten year anniversary next April.

You know what? The marriage went kaput, but I’ll bet your daughter will always remember that *you* came through for her (as you always have, right?). Her memories of that marriage may be sour but Mama had her back. Time well spent, even though. :)

FWIW, I used to sew professionally (theater) and I made my own wedding dress — also hand-beaded, all silk, long train, the works, thinking I’d pass it on to my daughter someday. Well, we have two boys! And we’re too old for more kids now. I have no idea where the dress will end up, besides my closet. Maybe one of our boys will marry someone who needs a dress. (Or not! LOL!)

I went to a wedding and the reception had a CASH bar.
Needless to say I didnt stay long, and neither did a lot of people.
How tacky....

Heh! I like that thought. We’ll see if I live long enough to see any! :)
