I am hoping they make it optional.
I am tired of the prying going on, now, if you use Google, it fills out the fields as you type.
So how much of my typing ON MY COMPUTER is google intercepting and recording? If I open a DOS window, does google see/know that?
How the heck is google tied into the bios on my machine so that things I type are getting sent to them?

Note that if you don't have a Facebook account, this icon does nothing. If you do have a Facebook account, this allows you to easily join the FreeRepublic Facebook page if you wish.
I normally run Firefox with the "NoScript" add-on, which prevents any web content from executing unless I give it permission to do so, and I don't get the Facebook button at all. If you're concerned about online privacy, you should definitely be running NoScript, or something like it.

A missile is fired off the coast of California and a Like button shows up on FR.
Coincidence? I think NOT!

It's pretty easy to get rid of it.
Just use Firefox, and install the NoScript plug-in.
Make sure that facebook.net is denied the ability to run JavaScript. It's denied by default, until you enable it.
I looked all over the page trying to find the "like" button, and finally realized that's why I couldn't see it.

And if he is OK with shilling for Facebook, will other forms of advertising be far behind?

Pinging all here for discussion.....I'm not being paranoid, but every time you read a thread with this new "feature" you're sending a request to the facebook servers with your IP address at the very least to get this code.
http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1 |
<script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:like layout="button_count">
|
Even if you do not click on it, if you see the "like" button that javascript is downloaded and run on your machine to pull down the image. That is why JimRob's posting interface strips off any javascript so you can't post malicious widgets to a thread. And yet, he opens this portal up to whomever for whatever.
Here is the code that it runs "just to pull down the 'like' image." They can update that and make it do whatever they want going forward.
I will post it in the next post to so I don't fill up your ping boxes!

I like the facebook ‘like’ button.
Here we’re all on the same side (more or less) and I like everyone (except for those I can’t stand)...
but on facebook I have the opportunity to preach to (I mean inform) liberals. And I do it every day.
This will just make it easier. Most original articles now have ‘share’ pages at the bottom, so that you can share the article in various ways including facebook.
Jim is a member on facebook and he posts nearly every day.
