Helen Mirren: British humour is cruel ('too Americanized via savage assimilation'; luvs France)
The Telegraph (U,K,) ^ | November 14, 2010

The actress told a French magazine that the tradition of British decency is in decline.

"I'm under the impression that this notion is disappearing from our society, where conflicts are made worse on cinema and on television, where people are nasty and cruel on the internet and where, in general terms, everybody seems to me to be very angry.

"This causes me a lot of pain," she said.

She singled out British comedy as an example. "I prefer the finesse of French humour. English humour is harsher, more scathing, more cruel and more surreal too, as illustrated by Monty Python and the TV series Little Britain, where situations are far-fetched and over-the-top."

The 65-year-old actress, who won an Oscar for her role in The Queen, said her home country had become too Americanised. "England is constantly threatened by a savage assimilation. This isn't the case with France which remains furiously protective of its culture."

Dame Helen lives in Los Angeles with her American husband, Taylor Hackford.

"From the age of 15, I desperately wanted to be Brigitte Bardot and to go and live in St Tropez. But I was just a small and plump English girl with spots

It’s a sad day when the French are considered more genteel than the British.

But the French need to get rid of the Muslim’s if they really want to protect their culture.

Spectacularly successful British actress living in USA but railing against Britain’s ‘savage assimilation’ of American culture while gushing over the glories of France ping.

True, but she’s cute at 65. Cut her some slack. :)

I don’t trust anyone who can’t appreciate a little Monty Python — at least on occasion. ;)

Love the puppy though. :) ROFL

She’s worrying about the wrong culprit when it comes to England’s future assimilation.

LOL! Jerry Lewis got a medal from the French for his comedy.

If the chicks are that hot when I get to 65 they can spout off about whatever they wish! Hearing aids have volume control. :)

She should have ended up by deploring how young women dress and behave today. “Why, in the 1960s, we were all young *ladies*, dressing demurely in floor length dresses, never using bad language, and having formal teas with cucumber sandwiches. At least that’s what I remember after having taken all that LSD.”

“...British decency is in decline.” And then she cites Monty Python. Someone break the news to her that Monty Python was almost 40 years ago.

She thinks Americans are savages but lives and works here.

People here work, and work hard. They make money. Something I hear constantly from commies, is moaning and groaning about how everything has been ruined and destroyed by progress - but somehow they never want to live in those quaint backwards countries, just visit on vacation.

And France is not being assimilated by the US - it’s the muslims that are taking it over. And Britain too, if they don’t wake up.

True - and Brigitte Bardot is plump, ugly and spent wa-a-a-ay too much time in the sun in St. Tropez.

On the other side of the coin, if she’s so sensitive to barbarians and all the filth of American pop culture, why in the world does she live in the very toilet bowl that feeds the sewer?

This from a woman who starred in Bob Guccione's Caligula and accepted the paycheck.

To Brits (even rich Brits living off the fat of the land in Hollywood), America is always at fault.

And the stupid cow doesn’t even think Monty Python is funny!

This from the woman who appeared in Caligula, The Thief, The Cook, His Wife, The Lover...whatever, Calendar Girls, I even saw her do a nude scene in Shakespeare at the National Theatre in London, for God’s sake.

Yep, she starred in that rather raunchy epic. Even I,a person with a strong stomach, was repelled by some of the stuff that went on in that thing.

I love Helen Mirren and think that she’s a great actress. And as a guy and sexist pig that I am, I also just like looking at her naked, nude and naughty.

If you liked her nude in “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover”,.....you’ll like her in “The Age Of Consent” too, a silly, cliched portrait of the so called typical “Bohemian” artist making bad paintings of beautiful nude young girls in and out of wet dresses.

http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Age-of-Consent/70110079?strackid=a4a9a1f60c6ff87_28_srl&strkid=902641101_28_2&trkid=496833#height2475

She’s still very smart and sexy despite her thoughts about America and Americans. I’ll give her a pass.

I’ll watch her movies, because she is a good actress. But I won’t give her a pass.

I can’t imagine running down your country (that gave her a title) AND the country she’s making good money in for being “savage”. She should get on her hands and knees and thank the US that we have developed a system that gives her the handsome paycheck she is used to.

In my book, that makes her an ingrate and an hypocritical snob.

I don’t trust anyone who can’t appreciate a little Monty Python — at least on occasion. ;)

And the idea of lumping the spectacularly brilliant and timeless Monty Python's Flying Circus in with the FAR more coarse (and not nearly as funny or innovative, IMHO) Little Britain suggests to me that she either hasn't seen or understood either.

Love the puppy though. :) ROFL

  Delighted ;-)
