FReeper Family, I have a few questions about my F-150, which just got carted off to the repair shop. It won't go in reverse. It locks up after going a couple inches and all I can do is rev the engine after that. The truck goes forward all right.
While the tow operator was checking out the problem, I saw that the drive shaft turned properly when going forward but when he put it in reverse, the small lug nuts that connect the shaft to the transfer case struggled to turn the way they should and the whole assembly just locked up. The repair shop will open the transfer case and let me know what they find out.
My first question is any guesses as to what the problem is? How much do you think it will cost--best and worst case scenarios. Thanks for any suggestions you all might have. BTW, ditching the Ford and buying a Chevy is not a valid suggestion :-)
About 3 weeks ago my husbands ‘09 Ford F150 p/u ran away with us on a busy city street. It accelerated by its self while he had the brake all the way down. This was not the case of floor mats causing the problem. We ran into the back of a car before he could get it stopped, even with it in neutral it continued to lunge ahead. It happen again the same day and after that we called a wrecker and had it towed, no damage the second time. Bye bye Ford hello Cheve.
OUTSTANDING!!
Anybody who has you for a friend is a very lucky person!
LOL! Thanks, Girl. I just don’t need that big of a truck, not to mention the state charges you more for registering a larger truck.
How frightening! I’m glad you all and no one else was hurt. I’ve never heard of that happening in a Ford before. However, when I was about 11, my mom mistook the gas for the brake and hit a fire hydrant. She was driving the Maverick back then.
I appreciate the insight. The shift column goes into all gears successfully, it just doesn’t want to move much after hitting reverse. Thanks again!
Welcome.
My car is electronically shifted.
The shift column isn’t truly hooked to anything except a bunch of electronic stuff.
Yes, it is a little big. Here in CO. trucks can get recreational plates, not for commercial use; and they are much cheaper.
Good golly! What an awful story. I’m glad you were able to get rid of it. Makes me wonder about all this new technology of cars making “corrections” for inattentive drivers. Pretty soon, we’ll just be riding along on Disney rides while the car does all the steering, braking and turning for us. Scary and un-American.
So, that's it. Rusted emergency brake cable. And a totally new problem to figure out. Thanks again for the theories and the company on a rainy Saturday. God bless you all!
All you need is practice. I have been driving a stick since I was 18 and rolling back is not a problem. If someone gets too close behind me when I am on a hill, I rev the engine a bit and pop the clutch and get a faster than normal take off.
Well, I always popped the clutch and I hated that I never seemed to get a smooth getaway. I do better with motorcycles than with cars when it comes to shifting. And, in fact, shifting would be a lot more fun, now that I’ve moved to a rural part of the state. The town I work in just got its first traffic light :-)
FWIW I love my Ford truck, an '07 F250 which just rolled over 100,000 this week and I plan on buying another one before too long.
That's a beautiful truck. Mine is burgundy and I love it. Mine is at 100,600+.
My 2000 Chev Silverado is 3K over 200K and going fine It’s had some work but they all require that. Previous truck was a ‘90 Silverado - 6 w/ 5 spd tran and a high speed rear end - best truck I ever had and lost it to a deer. 245K and still running smooth but the ins company got impatient - I couldn’t find a 2 wheel drive pu (new was not an option).
Interesting, I have a 09 Ford F150 p/u 4x4. It is just over a year old now with 15K miles.
Did you return the truck to the dealer and if so did they offer any explanation?
I have had no similar problems thankfully. Although the SINC system did stop working about a week ago.
We were turned off by the take over of GM by the gov. but have gone back there in spite of that.
Well I will certainly take it in the first time that happens.
