I'm giving serious thought to purchasing an M4 (civilian). Lot's of manufacturers out there - Colt and Bushmaster, among others. I'd appreciate suggestions as to which manufacturer and model is best, and why. It's been 20+ years since I trained with an M-16 in the Canadian Army Reserve (we called it the C-7). So the M4 seems like a good fit in terms of similar operation and parts. With that said, I'm open to other suggestions in the carbine field. Thanks.

They’re all pretty good. Buy a lower receiver and parts then assemble the lower yourself. Save money by buying off brand parts. Then splurge on the upper already assembled.

Phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range. Works for me.

Purpose of having rifle? Hunting? Self Defense?

Where would it be used, especially for self defense? Rural? ‘Burbs? Urban?

Range to probable targets?

Your skills and weapon familiarity?

Mine is a Bushmaster, M-faux. :-)

I love it. I think Bushmaster makes a quality rifle. But others do, too. The Sig 556 is catching my eye lately.

But be ready for the sticker shock... it’s not just the rifle, but its the optics. The optics will cost more than the rifle. Count on it. I have the Leupold CQ/T on mine and I love it. That lighted reticle, corrected for .223 ballistics... just rocks. But... I also love the Trijicon ACOG. I’m considering getting one.

Now is a great time to buy an AR rifle. Prices have come down to pre-obama times and even lower. I’ll just throw out a few thoughts.

If you want an M4 style, the mid-length gas system is worth looking at. It improves extraction reliability somewhat by starting the extraction cycle slightly later and thus at a lower pressure. Also, a bayonet will fit properly on a mid length upper, if that matters to you.

I think Bushmaster is slightly overpriced but not really “bad”. Noveske and LaRue seem to be the hot items nowadays. I believe Colt still has the large pins in their lowers so they won’t interchange with anything else. Quality is good though.

I would recommend a wolff extractor spring and rubber O-ring upgrade. A cheap way to add reliability.

Without naming companies, I would avoid going to the bottom of the price tier, unless this is just a plinking rifle. Chrome lined barrels are nice too...

Carry on :)

Just buy a Colt and forget about it. Everything else is a copy, no matter how much they claim their product is “improved”.

The Daewoo DR-200 in .223 or the DaewooDR-300 (7.63X39) may be more to your liking. It is very accurate, right out of the box, and can easily be fitted with a folding stock, scopes and sights to your liking, etc.

The Daewoo is reliable, with an action similar to the AK-47, not the Matty Mattel.

YMMV.
