(CNN) -- Twinkies. Nutty bars. Powdered donuts.
For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.
His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.
The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.
For a class project, Haub limited himself to less than 1,800 calories a day. A man of Haub's pre-dieting size usually consumes about 2,600 calories daily. So he followed a basic principle of weight loss: He consumed significantly fewer calories than he burned.
His body mass index went from 28.8, considered overweight, to 24.9, which is normal. He now weighs 174 pounds.

I agree this is silly. Why not try the starvation diet? Eat nothing but a crust of bread and only drink water every day and you will lose weight too.
I was prescribed statins but refused them because of the potential side effects. I started eating a lot of oatmeal and my cholesterol and triglycerides dropped like a rock and have remained within acceptable levels since.
I lost 35 pounds on a no carb (less than 28 grams/day)diet. As one of the other posters pointed out, it is very difficult not to gain weight rapidly when you start eating some carbs again. I had to seriously restrict carb intake to retain the weight loss.
Whoa! Sounds like your kid can't hold his applesauce.
That's not the premise most commonly in dispute when it comes to weight loss. He should do another experiment eating about the same number of calories of mostly protein rich foods that are low in carbs and see which results in the most and fastest weight loss.
I often think it really is just a crap shoot. There are just so many instances of people doing everything that’s supposedly wrong with nary a scratch and others that do everything considered right dropping dead at an early age anyway. *shrug*

1/2 a tortilla has as many calories as a whole carton of strawberries.
If you eat your starchy carbs in moderation, they are fine. But moderation means extremely small portions.
Bread has very high calorie content per volume. That’s why it’s been a diet staple for eons.
Any food coloring in it? My son spazzes (cries, grabs at his face, can’t control his temper) when he has anything with food coloring in it.
No, apples, water, corn syrup, and HFCS. I just don’t get it. I can my own using Gala apples and I’ve never had to add anything but cinnamon. It is difficult to avoid all that crap, but I definitely feel like it’s worth it. I’ve been accused of being a greenie weenie for this, but I just don’t want to eat that crap.
Twinkies have a disgusting chemical taste to them. YUCK!
Remember we’re in an environment now where cities are banning transfats selling meals with “too many” calories and toys. There’s a DEFINITE need to demonstrate this simple concept in as many ways as possible. The food police are getting bold, they’re probably going to be gunning for Twinkies next, now there’s “proof” it’s not the Twinkie.
So there’s hope for those people who live in “food deserts” after all? ;-).
I wonder if they’ve changed the recipe? I don’t remember them tasting like that when I was a kid. Same with Ding Dongs (which could be in my head only because they don’t come in the little foil wrappers anymore. lol)
wow! Weird that he’d have that reaction. There is nothing wrong with monitoring what your kid eats. Nothing! I wish more parents would do the same.
It certainly did for me. While my good cholesterol didn't go up all that much, my bad cholesterol came way down (along with my high triglycerides).
