(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.

CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.

KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.

Scroll down for KFMB video showing the launch.

If we didn't do it, there would be a lot of sub hunting going on. It was a US Sub launch...

As big as it appears to be, the question the reporter should have asked was ‘where does it seem to be heading?’

The Navy says it wasn't theirs. Obviously it was theirs. Or perhaps it was this:

Vandenburg says it wasn’t them.

If it's classified, which is the case with tons of Vandenburg launches, what else are they going to say?

When we lived in the Santa Clarita Valley, we'd often see a 'northern lights' effect during those launches, even though Vandenburg is far away.....sometimes traffic would stop on the freeway to watch the show.

If it went exo-atmospheric, it was ours.

But it was ours anyways ...

Odd that it was done that close to shore.

Perhaps it was a “Bedford incident” moment ... “Captain Finlander: ... if the Russian does shoot, I’ll fire one. Ensign Ealston: FIRE ONE SIR!!” Vampire Vampire Vampire ...

If they wanted YOU to hit it, that means they don’t post here.
If they knew what you would hit, they would not partake.

With a contrail that large and with the launch 35 miles at sea means this was probably a submarine missile launch test of some kind. The Navy does not normally discuss these things, but they do conduct tests our there now and then.
