Let's be honest, Apple's claim that it neglected to preload Flash on the new MacBook Airs so that users themselves could download and install the latest (and safest) version was a bit of a red herring. Behind that thin veil of corporate courtesy, we're now seeing a pretty potent cause for Apple's dumping of Adobe's wares. Ars Technica's review of the 11-inch Air discovered that the machine could crank its way through six hours of web browsing when Flash was nowhere near it, but only four hours with Flash installed and giving it "the full web experience." The primary culprit was Adobe's penchant for using CPU cycles to display animated ads, which were typically replaced by static imagery in the absence of the requisite software. So yeah, it's not a surprise that a "richer" web would require more resources, but it doesn't speak well for Flash's efficiency to find a laptop loses a third of its longevity when running it.
Trying to decide which I hate more Flash or Ads.
Tell me this story isn’t begging to be spun.
Have at it FRiends.
Ha. Ha. I don’t know what the bigger news of the day is: Obama is still president or Flash is a battery pig.
Adobe Acrobat and Flash are just more bloatware than a computer really needs.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
Flash is the worst. Adobe can’t port it to another OS to save their life. Not that the PC one isn’t without issues. Way too many years of code bloat.
Wireless sucks. It always has even though Apple has worked most of the problems out except for the batteries. They suck big time. I should have insisted they wire me with the keyboard and mouse. I am constantly having to recharge.
Wired keyboards and mice are available for both Mac and Windows, you know. :P
Why decide? Hate both. :)
I know, but they talked me into wireless which in every phase of anything I have had extremely bad luck with.
Thanks for the info. Hubby just got the Air. I’ll share this info with him if he doesn’t already know.
No spin required -- we all know that Flash is a resource hog. The only question is whether we feel like we need to look at annoying Flash-animated advertisements more than we need battery life.
Me? I use the "FlashBlock" add-on for Firefox, and only enable Flash for those sites where I need it to view content.
When I have to work on a browser that has Flash running unblocked on all pages, I feel like I'm at an arcade, and want to put my fist through the screen after 5 minutes of freaking dancing, prancing, blinking, swaying, annoying crap distracting me from what I want to read.
I have no problem with static ads, BTW. Somebody has to pay for the bandwidth, and that's fine.
What kind of rechargable batteries are you using in them?
I get sick of opening a page and having some video play that I didn’t ask for. I use the flashblock plug-in with Firefox and it gets rid of the crap. When there is a flash item I want to see, I can click on it and it loads.
We had to go to the Magic Mouse with the MacBook pro as we could not master the track pad. I didn’t think we would like the MM but our daughter insisted we give it a try and it is very well designed ergonomically and the side to side scroll is a plus. I need a wired mouse on my iMac as I have a habit of falling asleep with the mouse in my hand and dropping it on the floor so I have the cord wrapped around a lamp to tether it...
AMEN!
I will look for it. I love Safari 5, but it doesn’t have as many of the best add-ons as Firefox, so I tend to use Firefox more, even though it is a memory and cpu hog. Same reason I end up using Windows more than Mac even though I have both.
ClickToFlash is a life-saver for my MacBook. If I let Flash run, the fan runs constantly, further worsening battery life.
