Apple is to computers as Mercedes is to cars.

Also, I read an article today that MacBook Air’s will not have to be xrayed to get onto a plane.

Why not get a 13’ MacBook Pro for just about $200 more?

You might prefer the smaller size if you are carrying it around a lot. I think 11 is a really nice size. I have a dell 11” notebook, and it is just big enough to have a full keyboard and usable screen, but still small enough to really easily carry it around.

Can I load linux on it?

Is that supposed to be a compliment?
Merc is near the bottom in reliability these days.....

I’m not a Mac Zombie, but my wife did give me a MacBook Air as a gift two years ago and I have to say it’s an awesome machine to tote around, great for airplanes, hotel rooms etc.
I use it mainly for writing and web surfing. Alas if it had a PC operating system I could use it for serious work, but it makes for a good stopgap when I need a computer in an unusual location once I get past the usual Mac frustrations.

So in reality, the MacBook Air is a $1000 Netbook?

Once again, Apple hardware guys have outdone themselves on usability smarts. I'd pay that price for the hardware alone, and load software of my choice. Kudos to the hardware design team.

We are taking delivery of a 13” Mac Book Pro tonight when our daughter delivers it. It’s my wife’s birthday present...

Because I can get a 17" HP laptop for much cheaper, and it doubles for a desktop. For portable, truly portable, this beats the pants off the Vaio. I would like to see how well it lasts in the hands of a field
apeengineer.

Mind you, I think the MacBook Air is a marvel of engineering and all, but the price still is a bit steep.
If all I need is the basic functionality that a netbook provides, I can get one for under $200.

I need one that can survive a fall from 20', get dropped from hip height 2 or 3 times a day, stand the network port being plugged into a POE supply WITHOUT bursting into flame, 802.11 a/b/g, coffee and beer proof, and with a battery that won't die on a tower 200' off the ground.
Because my guys are good at what they do. But they SUCK at taking care of equipment.

So in reality, the MacBook Air is a $1000 Netbook? Show me a Windows "netbook" with the same or equivalent features to the Macbook Air -- size, weight, Flash instead of rotating HD, battery life in similar use, CPU and graphics power, etc. Ignore the "coolness factor" since that's subjective; likewise OS preference.
What does that Windows "netbook" cost, and who makes it?
BTW, I'm asking seriously, no sarcasm. I don't know, but I assume you do, from your question.
