Steeler Fans Put Their Money Where Their Mouth is for James Harrison

In what might be a first, Steeler Fans angered at the $75,000 fine handed out by the NFL to James Harrison are trying to help him pay that fine.

It started with the Facebook page here which encouraged fans to send a dollar to the NFL Commissioner to be credited towards the fine. I have been monitoring the site and the media coverage, and it seems that the NFL will be receiving at least several thousand dollars in the mail over the next few days.

I think this is of note because of the activism component, the speed of which this movement came out of nowhere reminded me of the early days of the tea party movement. NFL fans are getting fed up with the "chickification" of the NFL, and this may be the first shot in the war.

Steeler Nation - once again we are proving that we are the best fans in the NFL!

If you are so inclined, my and my son's Pittsburgh Sports Blog has more about the event: http://bleedblackandgold.wordpress.com.

Thousand of fans have claimed to have sent a dollar or more to the NFL to pay for (and protest) James Harrison's fine from a tackle he made last Sunday. The story has not gotten legs outside of Pittsburgh, but you Steeler fans out there (and I know you are out there) might be interested in this interesting bit of activism,

Did not see the tackle, but if this guy has any class he will pay his own fine and donate the money to a good charity.

Look, I’m a huge Steeler fan but Harrison can pay his own fine. He’s loaded, I’m not. I agree with Harrison that this is unfair, but most of life is. He’ll get over it. Anyway, Harrison’s best hit was against a drunk Brownie fan (see post #2).

:-)

The reason the story hasn’t “gotten legs outside of Pittsburgh” is because pretty much everyone not beholden to the black and yellow feels that while the hit on Cribbs (Harrison’s college teammate) was questionable but probably legal, the hit on Massaquoi was a textbook example of a violation of the helmet to helmet rule. Harrison’s crowing about knocking out Cribbs didn’t help his cause either.

I love the Steelers and don’t agree with the fine, but I’m not sending in any cash for Harrison. Let him appeal. He’s got a heck of lot more money than I do.

And d*mn stop saying ‘chickafication’. I’m tired of everything being blamed on women when men act like wimps.

Massaquoi was responsible for what happened to him. He went flying, over the middle, right at a practically stationary Harrison. All Harrison did was stand his ground.

It was the intent. Josh Cribbs is sports god to Cleveland fans, for his hard play and connection to the fans. Those hits were much more than part of normal hard play; they were about taking out the two players that could most lead the Browns to victory.

Two *of* the players that is. You didn’t see him taking on Peyton Hillis like that, did you? Par for the course for a guy that smacks women around....

"the hit on Massaquoi was a textbook example of a violation of the helmet to helmet rule."

It's pretty hard to have a classic violation of the helmet to helmet rule when Harrison's helmet didn't hit Massaquoi's. Watch the replay. Harrison's helmet goes in beside Massaquoi's helmet. The blow is delivered high on Massaquoi because Massaquoi was going down to chase the ball. If he remains upright he takes a shot in the chest.

The hit on Cribbs was legal and it's hard to call a bang-bang play like that questionable. Harrison is a tough guy and he hits hard but he's not a head hunter like so many others are.

"Look what's happening to the NFL, for crying out loud! The chickification, political correctness is destroying the National Football League."
- Rush Limbaugh, 10/21/10

Damn straight. Next thing you know pansy leftists will force military troops to have to go through a lengthy rules-of-engagement check list before they can fire back at the enemy ... and/or troops will receive medals for "courageous restraint" by withholding fire when they are attacked.

Oh wait ...

I’m tired of it too, but it does make for a better soundbite.
