Yep, Apple Killed The CD Today
TechCrunch ^ | Thursday, October 21, 2010 | MG Siegler

Stop. Take a deep breath. Before my headline gets you all worked up, consider what I'm saying here. The CD and other optical discs, like DVDs and Blu-rays, are obviously going to live on for a while as a way to transport media. But make no mistake that today, with two unveilings, Apple has effectively sealed the fate of the optical disc in the computer industry. Soon, it will go the way of the floppy disk...

First of all, the first-generation Airs were a bad combination of underpowered and overpriced. That is no longer the case. Second, they required some convoluted desktop computer CD syncing system to be able to install something from an optical disc to the Air (or an optional USB add-on). That is also no longer the case (though both still exists).

When you get your MacBook Air and you open the box, you will find exactly zero optical discs inside. Normally, Apple includes at least one back-up DVD to reinstall OS X and other software if your computer fails. But now, that has been replaced with a super-slim USB stick. This stick, packed in with your manual, is all you need to reinstall your system now.

This makes a lot of sense. CDs were replaced by DVDs because they offered a lot more storage. But flash memory cards, such as the one Apple includes with the Air, are already blowing DVDs out of the water when it comes to storage. They may still be more expensive to produce, but Apple has clearly figured out a way to make it work. I suspect we may see more drives like this one (which use much less plastic than typical USB flash drives -- and appear to even use less plastic than optical discs).

The iMac killed the floppy in 1998.

USB thumb drives can be made with ROM chips - can’t be erased either, and are less fragile than optical. This makes sense for software and restore disks.

BluRay is going to end up as the last rotating optical format.

You are wrong my FRiend, you are actually on the vanguard. They are now selling USB record players to plug directly into your computer.

Unbelievable. I have one at home in the US that looks almost exactly like that. Have several dozen old records, too. And it still works!!!

The one I have that I play Francis Albert — and George Beverly Shea — on is actually a beautiful, modern replica of it.

Frint grille is the only thing different on mine.

I also have a new one that I plug into the laptop in order to digitize LPs.

Also, each time the chips have gotten faster, the OSes have been made bigger with more capabilities and frills, so the increased speed can barely be noticed. :’)

And I even have one of those clear Lucite weights we used to put on top of the 80-column card stacks to keep them feeding smoothly... Makes a good paperweight / historical artifact / conversation piece... '-)

I still have boxes of them!!! Guess I should go through and clean them out. Many are old programs for various pieces of machinery some of which is still in service.

Your hex joke now joins the binary joke, "There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who don't".

I wonder how many people even understood your joke?

Ever have a shoebox filled with super slim USB sticks and tried to find a specific file on a specific stick?

Even worse, microSd cards are so darned small you can't even label the stupid things.

Whatever new PC technology creates like new operating systems etc, it is outweighed by the time wasted converting over to the new latest technologies...

It's all about $....Force people to buy more stuff.

Not only that, but the need for methodical and comprehensive conversions from one media format to another is little understood in most quarters. Don't even talk to me about proprietary data formats.

Apple, vastly overpriced, overhyped equipment that they own and dictate how you use it. I’ll keep tinkering and upgrading my Windows machine that I built for much much less that works much much better.

Oh, but, I don’t look all trendy

>> Apple products are needlessly expensive, not upgradeable and become obsolete, plus Apple controls what you have from the moment you buy it, and keep paying for it. I’ll take my home built machines that run on Windows 7, or, if I like, Linux. I can buy parts, tinker with it, replace parts, and do what I want, and it costs sooo much less. But, I don’t get to look trendy.........

As one home "tinkerer" to another:

Don't get me wrong -- you're certainly entitled to repeat yourself. But can you add to the conversation beyond that anti-Apple screed?

Tell ya what, I'll not repeat myself in your honor, but I'll direct you to the answer to your criticism, which you must have missed before because you didn't reply:

Awesome device - it’s made by somebody named “Cuisinart”. Probably a high-end audio company.

I wouldn't know but high end electronics will serve you well.

As a youth I had one of the finest turntable stereo systems money can buy. It was a Klausenplay.

The thing about Apple is that it tends to be the first major OEM to do these things: drop floppies, drop CRT monitors, now drop optical media. The other OEMs usually follow within a decade. Apple can do this because it controls the platform and isn’t afraid to piss people off in order to advance the state of technology.

Optical discs aren’t just for software.

I have an 8 Terabyte Drobo that I rip all DVD's to, then play over my network. The next generation of Hard Disk drives will soon hold 10 terabytes per square inch. Small storage media devices are doomed, partly because of the tax imposed on the media by the media companies.
