Big albino muskie landed in Wisconsin

LADYSMITH, Wis.- It wasn't quite Captain Ahab's great white whale Moby Dick, but a Wisconsin angler reeled in a huge white fish -- a rare 51-inch albino muskie, officials say.

Paul Parise caught the white muskie Oct. 6 in the lower Flambeau River in Rusk County, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Tuesday.

"That is a pretty fantastic catch," Tim Simonson, co-chairman of the state Department of Natural Resources' muskie committee, said in a news release.

"Albino muskie are pretty rare to begin with, and for one to survive to that size is pretty uncommon given they don't have the protective camouflage to hide from predators or sneak up on prey. This fish stood out from Day 1, but through luck and maybe some skill, it survived."

The DNR said the fish is the second albino muskie taken in Wisconsin waters in recent years. In 2005, a DNR fisheries crew netted a 32.7-inch white muskie during population surveys.

Albinism is a heredity condition in which there is a total or partial lack of pigment that gives color to the skin, hair and eyes.

Emily, using a Shakespeare Scooby Doo Rod, landed this beautiful muskie. The fish was 45" long and weighed 26 lbs.

I don’t know enough about Great Lakes fish to know whether the muskie is good eating or not, but a 51” white fish to me would make a heck of a wall trophy.

One of my son's says he never goes fishing, he goes catching....its weird he and his brother were on the same dock fishing, he caught fish all day, his brother didn't, just got a few bites.....

My dad and I could go out trolling and I'd get a walleye and he'd get nothing...mom was also a catcher, while dad would say there are no fish in this damn lake....We had a place on Mullet Lake, in Michigan..Mom would go out by herself and several times over the years brought in a muskie...

My only problem with walleye, is I always thought I just had a snag, they lay on the bottom of the lake and until you get them up close to the top of the water, they never moved...

That’s an awfully tiny rod/reel combo to land such a big snot-rocket on!
