A United Nations working group is currently looking into how the UN should respond to possible threats to the planet from near-earth objects, such as asteroids, Mazlan Othman, the Director of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York on October 14 2010, the UN News Service said.
She said that the working group -- within the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space -- is expected to come up with recommendations which would be presented to the General Assembly for UN member states to make a decision on response to near-earth objects...
She said the Vienna-based Committee is also discussing space debris, among other issues, and long-term sustainability of space exploration... Other topics on the Committeeâs agenda include benefits of space technology, space and water, and space and climate change.
She said she could not rule out the possibility that some kind of life may exist somewhere in outer space, given the large number of galaxies and extra-solar planets out there... adding that she believed that if that was indeed the case, the UN, through UNOOSA would then support UN member states in discussing the issue.

Perhaps we can make a law mandating everyone buy asteroid insurance.
Never you mind. I keep a big tube of Preparation A on hand for just such emergencies as these.
So my tax dollars are going to pay some UN functionary to figure out a proposal (that will have to be reviewed by several layers of command, each getting paid more and more money) for how to deal with an asteroid strike? Presumably it will be something a heck of a lot longer than “put your head between your legs and kiss you a** goodbye”. Why do I bother earning any money at this point to have it pay for this idiocy?????
What, pray tell, is the UN going to do about the asteroids? They think they’re God.
UN - PBS - Just another appeal for more money!
Given the bulk of the UN are backwards , barbaric, Islamic third world nations who have not contributed to science ~ perhaps they should call the Israelis for advice.
I see these asteroids drawing a bead on us as a bigger threat to the planet than people exaling CO2. But what do I know? I’m no “brilliant” junk “scientist” like the global warmer boys and girls.
Who said space travel has to have “long term sustainability”?
I am so sick of the way leftists talk. Sustainable space travel is an issue for the 22nd century to discuss not right now!
Whoever gets the technology to deflect an asteroid will rule the world.
You can deflect them away...or toward, if you are not good, you nasty little powerless people!
Maybe they agree with Raum Emanuel that you should never let a crisis go to waste. And if you don’t have a crisis—make one up. Perhaps, if the global warming scare doesn’t work they will use this to scare us into a global government. Prepare for more of the same.
Global warming didn’t fly - so now here’s another chance for Gore, et al, to make up for their lo$$e$.
Nah this is just the UN hoping that an asteroid will arrive so they can declare planetary martial law.
What we need is a world tax to help fund the UN in looking out for us folks.
With NASA having been changed to Muslim Aeronautics and Space Administration, this all seems to fit like a glove.
All of the great changes that Obama has brought about is just so darn exciting.
Asteroids threatening Earth? Let Massachusetts handle it, they’ll call it hate speech.
All together now ...
BUSH'S FAULT !!!
