I’ll take Friedkin’s “Sorcerer” over Clouzot’s “Wages of Fear” for having a better ending and that Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

Parent Trap. The 1998 Linsey Logan version is better than the 1961 Hayley Mills version, although Mills is overall a better actress than Logan sadly turned out to be.

The new one definitely had its moments -- particularly moments when Natasha Richardson (R.I.P.) had screen time. Lohan didn't do a bad job in that one. The movie was a bit long for me ... particularly when my kids watched it over and over ...

The Charlton Heston version of Ben Hur is the 3rd movie made from that book/ play. The Bogie version of Maltese Falcon was the 3rd adaptation of that book. Evil Dead 2 was essentially a re-make of Evil Dead and was at least as good if not better. John Carpenter’s The Thing might not be better than Hawk’s Thing From Another World but it is great. Galaxy Quest was basically the SF version of Three Amigos (which itself was the comedy version of Magnificent Seven of course a remake of Seven Samurai) and was much better. last Man on Earth, Omega Man and I Am Legend are all versions of the same novella and all good in different ways. I just saw A Girl A Gun and A Noodle Shop, the Chinese Western version of Blood Simple and it’s quite good though given the awesomeness of the original probably not better.

That’s just a top of the head list. Remakes are as old as Hollywood and many are quite good.

I thought the 1994 Winona Ryder version of Little Women was far superior to the Katharine Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor versions.

Opinions vary but I also prefer the Lindsay Lohan Parent Trap to the Hayley Mills version. And I think the Keira Knightley Pride and Prejudice is the best theatrical version, even though the Jennifer Ehle BBC version is superior to any of them.

Imitation of Life (1959) with Lana Turner, Juanita Moore and Sandra Dee is much better than Imitation of Life (1934) starring Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers...

My contribution to these thoughts:

What was Steve Martin thinking in trying to, I dunno, refranchise (if that's the word) The Pink Panther series? Peter Sellers IS Inspector Clouseau.

Steve bit off far more than he could chew in trying to reprise the Seller's classics. I actually got sympathetically embarrassed for him in the one I saw. It was sad.

The Maltese Falcon. The Humphrey Bogart/Mary Astor remake is better than the Ricardo Cortez/Bebe Daniels original.

Lord of the Rings. I didn’t like the cartoon editions that much.

The 1939 version of “The Wizard of Oz” was a remake. I haven’t seen any of the earlier versions, but I’ve heard that it’s better than any of them.

Speaking of ‘Ben-Hur’, ‘The Ten Commandments’ was also a remake. In this case C. B. DeMille directed both, as only he could, for better or for worse.

The Maltese Falcon.

The 1931 version is jokey and flat. Nothing needs to be said about the 1940 remake!

I don't remember ever seeing The Omega Man, but I really liked I Am Legend.

John Carpenter’s The Thing. But very different from the original classic.
