Independents Favor GOP Rule 55%-31% As Elections Loom

Democratic voters are finally coming home — but are getting trampled by independents who have decided to move out of the house that Barack Obama built, according to October's IBD/TIPP poll.

After months of stories suggesting a GOP wave in November, Democrats are now shaking off their torpor and rallying behind the president and his allies in Congress, the survey found. But independents who joined them to elect Obama in 2008 have soured on Democratic leaders and their policies.

Likely voters favor a GOP Congress over a Democratic majority by 48%-43%, the poll found. Self-described independents would prefer Republican rule by 55%-31%.

"Independents don't believe that the country is pointed in the right direction. They see the November election as an opportunity to remedy the situation," said Raghavan Mayur, president of TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence, which conducted the poll. "Ideologically most independents — 58% — find themselves to the right of Obama."

The IBD/TIPP Presidential Leadership Index fell 0.2 point in October to 46.9, a new Obama low. Readings below 50 signal disapproval.

Obama's support among Democrats perked up to 81.5 from 77.4. But his approval among independents dived 6.3 points to 39.8, his first sub-40 score for this group.

Ten Gadsden flags and Obama’s coming, we’re finally on our own, this November I can hear the drumming, the Democrats are going to go! Got to get down to it, the taxes are cutting us down, should have been done long ago! What if you knew freedom and found it dead on the ground, how can you run when you know?

All democrats are hereby ordered home to the plantation forthwith.

Herein, all questioning of authority and critical thought are forbidden. Shackles on. Obey.

I might be flamed for this, but IMO, we should not interpret this as ‘independent become conservatives’ either. Many of those independents are sick of 0bama policies, and some even explicitly want a divided government. This means we cannot expect that if a conservative Republican Congress ascend in 2011, voters will automatically vote for 0bama’s opponent in 2012. If they have ‘divided government’ in mind, they will keep 0bama only for the sake of division.

What goes on in an Independent’s mind? Nothing? Nothing until right before any election?

And why are they polled six ways to Sunday while every conservative/Pub I’ve ever known was NOT polled?

Thanks! I actually love CSN and saw them in concert with my recently passed beloved uncle who was a certified hippie.

He was the only hippie I could tolerate.

I love CSN&Y, too. Their music was once the soundtrack to my life. Hate their politics, but I can’t help loving their music. Seems to be par for the course with most of my favorite musicians, but that was the era I was raised in.

Sorry ‘bout your uncle. I’ve got a hippie uncle too, and he’s a great guy in every way, but his politics. Liberal to the core.

You shouldn’t get flamed. You make a darned good point.

These Indies are not a monolithic group, by any stretch of the imagination. There are probably two major groups: 1) those who bought into the hopey/changey and/or suffered from white guilt and wanted a black guy to win but regret their vote now and, 2) those who voted for Obama as a repudiation of Bush-to teach the GOP a lesson.

IMO, the 2) group will the the easiest group to win and keep, if the GOP plays its cards right.

The 1) group votes on a purely emotional basis and are easily duped. This is the hardest group to win and keep because they are easily deceived by hucksters and slick talkers.

I’ve never bought into the idea that voters pre-plan divided government. What they will do is vote for people who will push back an agenda they feel has gone too far one way or the other. The divided government is not pre-planned, but is a reaction.

My uncle, who I lost in July, was a paradox.

A war hating flaming pot-smoking liberal who was also a brilliant military historian from WWI to present day.

And I do mean brilliant. From dreadnoughts to tanks, planes, battles, tactics, etc..

He amassed a 1000+ piece collection of military models and knew the history behind each of them.

I saw CSN with him and will never forget that concert.

Amazing. Some part of The Greatest Generation must have rubbed off on him. I can't explain that any other way. His aversion to war and his peacenik sensibilities does make sense in a sort of non-intuitive way, given all that he knew about war armaments.

Sounds like he was an interesting fellow.
