I hear that - it was the perfect storm of good football for my NCAA & Pro teams too (many of the same reasons!)
Yeah baby, the canes got spanked, it was a great day for football!
I think Boise State, TCU, Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan State, The SEC champ (if Auburn or LSU), and the BXII champ (if Nebraska, OU, or Missouri) now have the oppotunity to finish undefeated. I think more than likely though, only Boise State and TCU are likely to do so. Oregon is usually good for a random loss and the SEC and BXII champs will likely have one loss.
Go Noles!!
I know I’m in the minority, but I’d hate to see a full-blown playoff in CFB. Maybe one game after the 4 BCS bowls are played, but that’s it. CFB is the only major American sport where the regular season means everything. You have to be perfect. When the NFL goes to 18 games, there will be teams with 8 freakin losses going to the playoffs. Talk about commitment to mediocrity.
Also, the realignment should solve many problems. With NE to the B10, there will be a championship game, thus there can only be one undefeated team from that conference unless something really strange happens. The same goes for the P10 with CU and UU. The BXII is going to play a true round robin, so only one possible undefeated team from that conference.
The addition of Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State to the MWC should qualify that conference for an automatic BCS bid and would likely have only one possible undeated team.
I think Boise State has a great team. But, if they want to play with the top teams for a national championship, they need to schedule some top teams in their regular season. I’m sick of their tactic of trying to whine their way to the top.
I mean, come on - when BSU played #24 Oregon State, it was being touted as one of their biggest games ever... LOL In the whole history of BSU, they probably haven’t played as many games against ranked teams as my Volunteers will play this season alone.
For all I know, it’s likely that BSU could beat any college team in the nation in a championship bowl. But I also know that if they did win, it would be after NOT having spent the whole season getting beat down & injured by quality opponents. When they spend a season butting heads with top tier teams and then play a good bowl game, I’ll be glad to give them some respect. Until then, they’re just a big fish in a small pond.

If you keep the playoff to 8 teams, you’ll get all of the undefeateds plus the best 1- (and maybe 2-) loss teams. Good enough for me.
It’s a lit better than relying on computers and subjective polls. Let ‘em play it out on the field. Works for Div 1-AA (now FCS), Div 2, and Div 3.
Eight teams would work. Along those lines, Brent Mussburger suggested that the top 8 conference champions be picked for the playoffs. That would also work because this year the MW and WAC both deserve to have their conference champions in and the Big East does not.
Yeah, they play a weak schedule. At least next year, they’re moving up into the Mountain West. Of course, Utah is going to the Pac 10, and BYU is going independent, so it won’t be much different for Boise. Wonder if the arrival of Boise had anything to do with the departure of Utah and BYU?
I’m from Pennsylvania, so maybe I root for Boise because they remind me of Penn State. Back in the day, all Penn State did was win, but no one gave them any credit because it was crummy Eastern teams they were beating. It took them 15 years to be accepted as equal to all the other college powers.
Yeah, it wouldn’t surprise me if it came to light that BYU and Utah just didn’t want to be BSU’s whipping boys every year.
Personally, I’m in favor of a playoff system, but at least for now we have plenty of what-ifs to keep the fans having fun arguing. That may be more fun than a playoff anyway. :)
BTW - I spent Friday night and most of Saturday at an old-fashioned apple butter stir, so I didn’t watch much football this weekend. However, I did get to see the much-hated USC Trojans (coached by the much-hated Lane Kiffin) get defeated in the last second. :)
The problem with weak schedules is that teams are constrained by conference commitments, and then when you get a good team from a weak conference, no one wants to play them. So, these teams can’t improve their strength of schedule and the big boys duck them because they’re overrated- just look at their strength of schedule!
