'Secretariat' begins filming in Kentucky

DOSWELL, Va. -- In an era defined by a dispiriting war and a surreal Washington scandal, Secretariat gave Americans and their bruised psyche something to cheer about when the big thoroughbred captured the Triple Crown in 1973.

The racehorse considered by many to be the best ever and the housewife-turned-breeder who soared in a male-dominated sport are now coming to the big screen.

"Secretariat" has begun filming in Kentucky with Diane Lane portraying owner Penny Chenery and John Malkovich cast as trainer Lucien Laurin.

Mayhem Pictures, with the backing of Walt Disney Pictures, is producing "Secretariat." Mayhem's other uplifting sports-themed stories include "Miracle," about the 1980 U.S. Olympic ice hockey team, and "The Rookie" and "Invincible," both Walter Mitty tales.

Somewhere, amongst all my stuff, is an uncashed $2 WIN ticked from the 1974 Belmont Stakes. Had a buddy who was going to Belmont that day pick one up for me....just in case.

Can a fast dog like a Grey Hound out run a horse?

Bet it could in a 100 yard dash, or the 440.

Never mind.....Greyhounds are not only the fastest dog, but are second only to the Cheetah and Pronghorn Antelope as the world’s fastest animal.

Will Dana Bash or Contessa Brewer play the role of Secritariat?

Camilla Parker Bowles Windsor, or John F'n Kerry, from what I've heard.

I saw 3 of Secretariat’s races in person, and saw him at the farm 6 times. I had hopes for this movie.

Unfortunately, based upon reviews in the racing press, this movie is Disney-Confabulates-Secretariat. If you know much about horses or racing, it will probably make you crazy. If you know specifics about the people, it will make you crazier. [Pancho Martin was not a villain...]

When I read that the music played over the Belmont footage is “O Happy Day”, I knew I must not see this movie.

It isn’t as bad as Ruffian [Ruffian, a tall filly, played in part by a stocky gelding...] but it sounds cringe-worthy.

How dare you insult such a beautiful creature by posting such a demeaning and insulting comparison.

(I’m talking about the horse in the picture on the right, of course)

The world speed record for 1 1/2 miles on a dirt track still stands.

I saw Big Red run and was in the winner’s circle with him once, and his run was the most amazing thing I have ever seen a horse do. The trailer made my eyes prickle. So yes, I will definitely see it. Even though insiders have told me that the character of many of the principles has been cleaned up, it’s the horse’s character that counts.

What could be more boring? They made a movie about Seabiscuit a few years ago. Horse is born, has potential. Crusty millionaire horse-breeder with smart-alecky daughter finds jockey who needs a father-figure and a girlfriend, horse gets a cold, recovers, wins Triple Crown.

What we REALLY need is a movie about a rookie basketball coach in an inner-city school who leads a dispirited losing team to victory in the State Championships!

figures. I didn't care for Seabiscuit. <-- IMO it wasn't about the horse at all

Going to Evaseline Downs to film the movie. How unfortunate.

I saw Secretariat run the Preakeness. You could have sailed an aircraft carrier between Secretariat and 2nd place.

I believe the $2.00 winner paid $2.10.

It's not as if Saratoga and Belmont do not have plenty of time open without racing going on. Sigh.

Sigh, I don't know why Hollywood cannot simply tell the story without descending into untrue sentimental goo, or making things up. I resented the way War Admiral was presented in Seabiscuit.

Meadow Stud got Secretariat on the losing end of a coin toss.

Racing has the best stories. Hollywood just doesn't tell them.
