JAMESBURG, N.J. (AP) -- Officials suspended a fifth-grader in New Jersey who found a lighter on his way to school.
Jamesburg school superintendent Gail Verona told The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick the lighter had the potential to compromise student safety.
But the 11-year-old boy's father questioned why school officials consider the lighter a weapon.

In seventh or eighth grade science class I used the electric + weak acid in water to generate about a pint or so of hydrogen gas into a full width mouth glass container;and then lit it!
The flash was seen in all eight or ten classrooms and the offices, and there was a satisfying "pow".No glass breakage,no injuries,..but it did surprise EVERYONE involved.Oh, and no undue concern or stupid punishments, either.

Guess what, TSA doesnt consider lighters as weapons now. Really Then when I fly in two weeks I can actually leave my lighters in my purse and not have to hide them in my suitcase? Awesome!

Countless hours were also wasted collecting dead batteries and salvaging them for the zinc. We would dissolve the zinc in Muriatic acid to produce hydrogen gas which we would capture in balloons I never did that.
Milk Bottle tops and Caustic Soda.

The were right to suspend the boy: he was obviously planning to burn the school down, or even worse, light up a smoke! /s

...the lighter had the potential to compromise student safety. So do lots of other things, oh genius administrator.
Basing judgment on the potential for something to go wrong is lazy and pedantic.
Is it a job requirement for education administrators to lack basic judgment?
Every person who drives a vehicle has the potential to kill people. Shall we lock them all up?
Absurd.

Clearly sticks are a most heinous violation of our precious zero-tolerance policies and must be expunged from our schools forthwith!I beg to differ, I think the real threat to our society are magnifying glasses and the young men who use them to concentrate the energy of the sun.

I am working on a pencil sharpener that rounds off the tip of the pencil so it won’t be so sharp. I am sure I can cell it to the schools.

In my high school chem lab we assembled a five foot long rocket, and filled it with powdered zinc and powdered sulfur, tamping it down with a metal rod. Then we took it down to the athletic field and launched it a mile into the air. All under the supervision of the chemistry teacher.

I would demand a tutor come to my house. No on second thought I wouldn’t want any of those morons in my house. He found a lighter & gets a week off from school. Hmmm if it were back when my brats were in school all of them would have been finding lighters to lose a week of school. Asinine people run schools & get paid too well in NJ.

Contacted in Chicago, Professor William Ayers, humanitarian, said he applauded
the quick action by school officials. He was quoted as saying, “This kind of thing

I learnt to ski in Mansfield, OH. Don’t they have a haunted prison there too? And I thought THAT game was called Tiddly Winks.

Y’know, it’s a good thing there’s no magnifying glasses around anymore.
Think of the havoc an enterprising kid could do with one of those.
One nice unintended of all these kids getting suspended for silly things may be that they will start thinking seriously about the type of society they are growing up in.
