OK Kiddies....before you click the link that I'm going to provide I want to warn you about something. If you've done animal rescues, I'm sure you've seen this, and worse....but you may still not want to watch.
There are NO gory, bloody things in here...but it was a VERY hard video to watch. It has a happy ending, but the gist of it wasn't easy to look at.
I'm putting this up mostly for lurkers, people who just MIGHT be thinking of buying a cute little kitty or puppy from a pet store. These operations need to NOT be funded. They NEED to be shut down, and the only way we can do that is to not buy from pet stores.
I found this on Facebook, posted by a group calling themselves "Real Men are Kind to Animals".
And, while I have your attention...as we all sit her tonight discussing animals in helpless situations...we ALL need to continue to keep our priorities straight and think of ways we can come up with to stop abortion and the abuse of children.
Thanks. Have fun, no fighting, and enjoy the happy ending, OK?
Doggie ready for rehab!!
Yeah, if you’ll do it in the basement, I can get all that for ya.
Lucky goggies and kittehs. They seemed so happy to be clean, have fresh air, and be handled by kind poeple.
Wouldn’t it be nice if they could find all of the puppy mills of this sort and shut them down.
And send the perps to us...
Amen.
Warning growls should never be suppressed.
The dog that doesn’t growl is the dog that will bite.
It’s learned that giving a perfectly normal dog-language warning results in punishment, hence the alleged “sneak/silent/sudden biter” dogs.
An appropriate amount of growling is a good thing as it’s the best way for dogs to communicate their boundaries and intentions to one another.
[wanton, constant snarling is not acceptable]
That’s why early socialization is -so- important.
They need to learn to interact sanely with other dogs as well as humans.
[usually, you’ll find more behavior problems in a single dog home than a home with a “pack” of any size...the “only child” dog has no peers to put it in its place, so to speak]
My dogs, for example, are pretty much self-policing.
If the bitches bicker, another bitch or Odin will insert themselves between them to defuse the situation.
Hubby freaked out when Gypsy [as usual] started picking on Pookie and Djinni rushed over to them.
He thought they were going to “gang up” on Pookie.
I just said “No they’re not. Watch them” and Djinni defused the bickering by simply getting in between the other two and just standing there with neutral body language that put Gypsy’s mind in a calm state again.
If Gypsy is preoccupied with crickets or bunny smells outside and is slow coming back in, I send him out and he -brings- her back in.
[he fancies himself the Official House Cop]...:)
Phoebe [an Ibizan] has a serious grudge against Gypsy from the time Gyps first came here and “puppy played” by nipping her back legs.
Phoebe was very low in pack rank and didn’t discipline her for it.
Izzy [the former “enforcer”] passed away and the rank shifted and then later, Odin came here.
One day, Phoebe saw her chance for “payback” since The Enforcer was no longer around to stop her and went after Gypsy in the back yard...and she meant it.
Even though he was only 6 months old, Odin heard Gyps yelping in fear and saw his little “surrogate mom” being knocked down on her back and flew into the fray, body slamming Phoebe off of Gypsy and then blocking her from coming back.
Phoebe got the point, the “order” was re-established and even though she shoots Gyps dirty looks now and then, Odin is always watching....and she knows it and Gypsy finally learned to stop harassing her.
Take all of that and add myself interjecting my own commands as it’s happening and everybody pretty much knows what’s allowed and what isn’t.
Considering the wildly varying breeds/temperaments I’ve got going on here, the 6 of them do very well as a fully functional pack.
Ancient [14 years] Jack, who just doesn’t like Dobermanns once tried to pick a fight with much younger Odin and Odin very reasonably but definitely let him know there would be no more of this arbitrary foolishness.
Jack just ignores him now and stands completely still and calm if Odin decides to give him a sniff-over.
Our pack hierarchy is a subtle, always slightly shifting thing, much like a river flowing lazily along with ever-changing currents and eddies but the shifts are imperceptible to anyone who doesn’t “know the pack” yet they always find the new balance and harmony, themselves.
I rarely interfere because if I do, I will create sublimated conflict that -will- “flare up” sooner or later.
They have their own natural order.
I let them “just be dogs” but everybody knows who the Biggest Bitch is....;D
What’s odd is that “Dobermann show experts” keep telling me [and everyone else on our forum] that “no one can keep more than 1 male Dobe at a time”.
It’s a good thing I didn’t know that when I had anywhere from 2 to 4 adult, intact males running around the house during their rehab-to-rehome period.
Never had any “issues” and if I left 4 of them alive at home, I still had 4 alive when I came back.
Go figger....:)
That’s the prevailing wisdom, but it’s not always the case.
Huh. Just cuz SOME people go to bed at the crack of ... twilight...
Then there’s others, like me, who are too dumb to call it a day....
Ha!
I can adapt to any environment.
Thanks for the warning.
Not watching it.
We’re on then. Let’s see how they like those kinds of conditions.
>Wouldnt it be nice if they could find all of the puppy mills of this sort and shut them down.
And send the perps to us...<
Come on, this is HSUS. They have a platform that makes absolutely no distinction between the human filth that kept these animals in such abhorrent conditions and breeders who have one litter a year if that, health test dogs before their first breeding and who sell pups/kittens with contracts that provide the buyer with a guarantee the animal can be returned no matter how old the pet.
HSUS wants all breeding of animals, both pet and livestock, to be eventually outlawed.
And yes, I am beyond cynical when it comes to A/R outfits.
And then there’s the AKC who turns a willfully blind eye to all the dogs “registered” from these dog factories, even going so far as to issue “limited registration” papers to those who can’t naturally qualify for them, usually due to questions of parentage, all in the name of ~profit~.
[”limited registration, aka “yellow papers” mean that the dog cannot be shown in confirmation classes *but* after 3 generations of breedings from that dog, its progeny *can*]
The AKC is no longer the guardian of purebred registries, now they’re all about the bucks.
I’d like to see the AKC vs the HSUS in a death cage match, personally.
This must be shared!! Bump
Yeah, thank you. That was in the back of my mind too. And my second thought (after crying over the puppies and cats) was, “what is the vile HSUS up to now? Is this some sort of fund-raising effort?” After that, I thought that any vicious or dead animals were not shown, but surely there was at least one.
I’m glad that you brought it up late in the thread rather than spoiling the happy moments over the ending of the video before the reality of the agenda of the HSUS came crashing down on our heads.
I support my local no-kill shelters, two of them, with money and food each and every month. I visit them regularly and I know how they treat the animals and how hard they work to adopt them out.
It’s interesting that in a relatively new pet shop in my locality, it’s impossible to find a pup not registered with the Continental Kennel Club as opposed to AKC. Many mass producers of commercially available puppies have either fled AKC because of their DNA requirements, but also these entrepreneurs have failed, at some point, to pass AKC’s inspection process.
Now, am I saying AKC is blameless? Absolutely not. That said, there are rumors that AKC is finally waking up from its slumber and it’s mulling a “Breeder of Merit” program. This program will require, for each qualified breeder, breeding stock to have current health certifications for each particular breed (Chihuahuas do not need clearance for hip dysplasia, although many large dogs will not get through the process without OFA’s blessing). In addition, the individual breeders will have to meet other standards. Since this program is still in the planning stage, I cannot give the entire picture at this point in time. It will be far, far better than the “put 2 registered dogs of the same breed” system in place since the late 1800’s.
AKC, remember, has no “police power”. It’s a registry. It is made up of a “parent club” for each breed; then its balance is rounded out with the numerous all-breed, field trial, and other performance organizations. Each member club is entitled to send a delegate to its meetings. It is a corporation, so it does have a board of directors. The delegates, from what I read and hear, have a somewhat adversarial relationship to the board, but the entire organization seems to continue on, despite its flaws.
Thank you BG. I had not been here all day but just watched the video and it is heartbreaking to see. Think of all the ones that aren’t found in time.....
I’m heading to bed on that sad note!
Thanks for pinging also Dolly
No worries - that’s why the warning’s there.
Thanks for keeping me on the Doggie Ping List.
A while back I posted a thread about my minpin, Bebe, who has a brain tumor. I was thinking that it was getting toward the end for her, but guess what! She is still with me, she sits on her pillows all day, except when I take her out to the soft grass. She does her business, then finds me and I put her on my lap for a while. She still eats a little and drinks water, gives a kiss to any hand that pets her, and seems happy.
She won’t be here forever, and she’s weaker each day it seems, but all things considered, she’s getting along. The other day I gave her a beef rib bone with a little bit of meat on it, and she chewed on that thing for 15 mins. She still digs in her pillow, but only for a few minutes.
So, I’m glad. This slow twilight is very gentle.
