Why do teens and adults self-mutilate? There doesn't seem to be clear cut answers. Some tie the self-mutilation to abuse and not just to physical abuse but also neglect. Some cutters have said that when they cut they can regain control of their anger. While no one appears to have pat answers to cutting, self-embedding and self-mutilation, no one denies that it is a troubling trend.

You got that right. My daughter in law is an RN and surgical tech. She says that MRSA is rampant in hospitals.
Oh, and once my friends and I carried my father's aluminum boat down to the reserviour along with an electric motor and old car battery and we went for a cruise, me, Mags, and the Pevry sisters.
Man, those were the days.
the throw-away generation. these are the living abortions. their parents ought to held accountable.
You didn't smell bad did you? Otherwise you would have been hippies. :^)
Now I believe there needs to be a draft...these damned kids need to be in the military.
I have a friend whose daughter did this...my friend is a good Christian, married to a Christian man, homeschooling and everything.....it seems their children ended up highly affected by their “friends”....OR they rebelled against the religion in the home....it’s been difficult...the daughter is doing better now....I think our “culture” has a lot to do with it.
Boy, self abuse was loads more fun when I was a kid.
I have a friend’s daughter who did this. She was really depressed her freshman year. She had a hard time going from a small private Chrisitan school where she knew everyone to a large Christian school. I think it was also harder academically. I think she felt very insignificant.
It’s hard to hear about something like that happening to a nice Christian family. Usually, you think of Emo or Goth kids cutting themselves, but it’s more pervasive than that.
My neices may be typical pain in the butt teenage girls but I’m happy to say that they’re all pretty good kids.
They’ve all been taking turns sitting with my dad after his knee replacement surgery.
Our military? Heck no!
Chain gang maybe.
Ya think?
Check out my post #9. I think that maybe they aren’t rebelling against religion, but maybe they don’t know how to rely on faith through tough times. I think they are very immature in their faith.
My friend’s daughter is doing better. I hope your friend’s daughter does okay too.
it’s second generation narcissism.
This self mutilation may be on the rise but it is not new. Going back to the early and mid 1970’s I remember scaring. The practice of using a razor blades to scrape the name of your boyfriend or girlfriend into your arm and letting it scab over. If you did it real deep it would leave a scar. If you were less daring, it would go away when the scab fell off. My sister did it, and so did I.
Why did we do it? Got me. Just one of those stupid things young teens do.
I remember the last day of boot camp at MCRD in San Diego, the DI said, I did a better job on you in 72 days than your parents did in 18 years. In most cases, he was right.
I think it is the same mentality that causes women to have breast implants. Poor body image and feelings of inadequacy in various areas of life.
I had a friend/coworker who wanted to to drugs all the time. She would go to these concerts with horrible music (worse than raves) and do all sorts of psychedelic drugs and Ecstasy at them, and then drink to come down from the initial drugs. She told me that she would do this for up to 4 days in a row if the concert series was that long. She then would be out of it for one to two weeks.
I don’t get why people can be so stupid.
I didn’t know that self mutilation had become a problem, I always assumed a certain amount went on but that it was a extremely rare. I’ve never even heard of embedding.
The thing that blows me away is that tattoos have become an almost universal form of self expression. It seems as many women now as men are getting them.
