Men's pants sizes not accurate, but 'vanity'

Esquire Magazine discovered a secret technique used in the pants making industry called "vanity sizing," a merchandizing trick of sizes that make you feel good and want to buy the clothes.
Eyewitness News bought four pairs of labeled 36-inch waist pants from different retailers. Old Navy's pants measured 39 inches and H&M at 39.5 inches, while Banana Republic and The Gap both came in at 40 inches.
Esquire Magazine's own test measured H&M's size 36-inch dress pants as 37 inches, Calvin Klein's Dylan pant as 38.5 inches, and The Gap as 39 inches. The worst was Old Navy, coming in at 41 inches.

Sizes are not the same as there were...in waist or length. Once upon a time, I a wore 34 X 38 Levi’s 501 jeans. Now, I wear a 40 X 34. Did my legs get shorter as I got fat?

I sew some of my garments. In sewing patterns, which haven’t changed, I cut just outside the size 14 line. In some higher end clothing lines, I wear a 10. Basic mall clothes? A six. It hasn’t made sense to me for years.

judging from the list of stores, it seems more a metro issue than a real issue.
Seriously a tape measure does not lie.
The GAP? Old Navy? please.
Banana Republic lost its “cool” a decade ago.
If these stores think lying will help they are sadly mistaken.

I hear you! My Mom recently gave me a pair of wool slacks that she wore 40 years ago-sized 8 and they fit me perfectly. For me to buy jeans today I need a 2 or a 0 for them not to fall off of me. I hate it as it makes me feel as if I’m anorexic.

I don’t think this is what’s going on — I think it’s just lousy workmanship. I buy two otherwise identical pairs of pants, same size, one fits, the other doesn’t. Often the other isn’t even close. Thanks tlb.

Same with shoes. I had to try on 5 pair to get a “pair” that fit. The cashier couldn’t figure out why the two shoes had different SKU’s.
