Just wanted to make sure everyone saw this: The estimated 1.8 percentage-point increase in 2009 is the largest year-to-year uptick since the U.S. started calculating poverty figures in 1959.
This news came out a few hours after Obama held his press conference telling everyone not to worry, that the recovery is booming......
Tell all your liberal friends !!!
"The most important anti-poverty effort is growing the economy and making sure there are enough jobs out there," Obama said. "If we can grow the economy faster and create more jobs, then everybody is swept up into that virtuous cycle."
According to the demographers' projections, the working-age population took a hit in 2009. About 12.4% of Americans aged 18 to 64 were poor - up from 11.7% in 2008.
The 0.7 percentage-point jump is the largest since 1965.

How’s all that hopey changey thing workin’ out for ya?
Buyer’s remorse yet?
People are taking his advice and not trying to make money in the evil free market.
Obama said. "If we can grow the economy faster and create more jobs, then everybody is swept up into that virtuous cycle."
Hmmmm...seems to me that Ronald Reagan said something very similar, something about rising tides floating all boats...
Bush’s fault no doubt..
That’s easy to fix - just move the “poverty” threshold.
Yes: But Ronnie didnt try to tax the piss oput of us and spend a trillion dollars bailing out the rich bankers who use the stimulus to give themselves raises.
This is a direct result of targeting the “rich”, our nation’s employers and investors, by way of punitive tax and regulatory policies.
1.8% increase nationally ...
nearly 6,000,000 MORE people have now fallen under the official poverty level line,
under Obama.
(Did I do the math right?)
New number is 45,000,000 + -— the highest ever !!!!!!!!!
Yeah Obama !!!
and thanks too!
Not so loud, Zero may get ideas, and the poop too.
Round numbers are appealing. Fractions require more math skills.
This is the number for 2009. Just think what the number for the current year will look like.
Jump from 15% to 18% end of 2010 ???????
“Yet another dubious milestone for Zero.
WASHINGTON
The number of people in the U.S. who are in poverty is on track for a record increase on President Barack Obama’s watch, with the ranks of working-age poor approaching 1960s levels that led to the national war on poverty. “
It’s unfortunate timing for Obama and his party just seven weeks before important elections when control of Congress is at stake. The anticipated poverty rate increase from 13.2 percent to about 15 percent would be another blow to Democrats struggling to persuade voters to keep them in power.””
Yeah, unfortunate.
VERY unfortunate.
poverty is what happens to the middle class when they lose their jobs and homes, or at least the imputed value of their homes and investments and savings accounts
that is part of the obama plan to punish “the rich” who all benefitted from American society being unfair to the poor
except he’s finding out there’s not so much much “wealth” left to “redistribute”, is there.
So just tell Ben to fire up the printing presses and create more money ... We got to be rich! There’s still checks in the check book
Run an anti democrat ad with this info too.
