A TERRITORY girl is lucky to be alive after she was mauled by a savage dog.
Seven-year-old Meg Croton and her brother Connor, 9, had been feeding their family's dog - an eight-year-old mastiff cross - in their Humpty Doo back yard when the girl was attacked by the vicious hound.
"I tripped on a rock and fell, and I think I kicked his leg," Meg recalled the attack. "And then it hurt very badly and he was on top of me and ripped on my head. "But my brother saved my life."

Hmmmmmmm.... oh, my dear little girl, I am not entirely certain I believe this version of events.
This can’t be true since chet99 knows that ONLY pit bulls attack humans.
Most likely she tried to take the dog’s food away.
Well yes, kids generally tell a story that fits what they want adults to hear. Additionally, it appears this is another chained dog. And an adult dog adopted a year ago. Don’t know if the dog was neutered, etc. Not much info to go on. I tell you, I am not opposed to shelter dogs, but when you adopt an adult dog of unknown origins, and unknown parentage, you had be very sure you know what you’re doing and the fact that you would chain it in the yard and allow your children around it unsupervised suggests to me that you don’t meet the criteria of responsible adult. I’m just saying.
Having said that. Poor little girl, and brave big brother.
Shocker: Sheep Dog mauls toddler:
Well obviously the little girl attacked the dog. Everyone knows that dogs ONLY attack when "provoked."
Children do stupid things. Dogs too.
But the results are different: a poor innocent child gets a new puppy and suddenly vicious monster gets killed.
Sad. Some people just should not have animals...
This will piss off the Animal wackos, but NEVER, Never, never, never, never, adopt an adult dog.
Ever. You do not know what behaviors, triggers, emotional baggage the animal carries. Or if it will turn at something totally off the mark.
If you want a pet: get a baby animal. A puppy, kitten, chick, whatever. Raise it, train it, care for and nurture it. And do NOT have a pet BEFORE you have children.
Your doggy loves YOU and will see the new “pets” aka your children, and lessor animals in the “pack” and will attempt to dominate them, forcing them to submission. And human children have NO PACK instinct, they will do the human thing: RESIST.
You might as well TRAIN you dog to attack and kill your children as at least then you won’t be shocked when it happens. /s
Why is every frigging dog bite story a newsworthy event on FR? Jeeze.
Yep she probably wanted to eat it herself. Everyone knows that dogs NEVER attack children without a good reason.
Maybe the poor doggie is mortally ashamed of living in a place called “Humpty Doo.” I know I would be.

How about putting in the time and effort required by your dog's breed and personality, instilling a sense of self-discipline and adequately restraining and supervising your dog at all times? Has that been proven ineffective, somehow?

Because another Freeper frequently likes posting stories about pit bulls to ad nauseam. Others are posting stories showing that pit bulls are not the only dogs that attack.
I was very clear in stating that you get it AS a puppy and THEN train it, love it, and treat it right. They are inseparable. You cannot retrain it, because you do not know what adult behaviors were conditioned. And you cannot just get a puppy and ignore it. I was VERY clear.
In no form was my post the singular event your blind animalist idolatry suggests.
Because people lost interest in hippo attacks.
What if a dog bites a Koran?
If you hadn’t spelled your user name incorrectly back in 1998, none of this would have ever happened. :O)
Mastiff dogs can refer to a specific breed, generally the English Mastiff, but it is also a classification of dog. Rotties, English Mastiffs, Dogues, BullMastiffs, etc. are all considered Mastiff dogs. It is very, very unusual for an English Mastiff to attack and BullMastiffs are bred specifically for their ability to subdue WITHOUT mauling.
Since this was a Mastiff mix, no telling what kind of dog it was. Unfortunately, it is very common to mix Mastiffs with Pits to increase the prey drive. I’m not saying a dog with Pit blood was involved, but nobody can say it wasn’t either. I would just question what kind of mix it is.
