Is Android Bad for Google’s Brand?
Marketwatch ^ | 09/07/2010 | Cody Willard

“The public doesn’t trust Google as much as it does Apple. And the Nexus One debacle proves that without a customer service infrastructure, you’re screwed.”

So wrote the best music analyst and one of the best bloggers extant, Bob Lefsetz on Lefsetz.com last week. He was making a point about how Apple’s biggest secrets to success lie in the company’s ability to simply deliver the best customer experience of any corporation on the planet. His words as to how Apple got so good:

“You’ve got to go back ten years. Actually, just a bit longer, to when Steve Jobs came back to Apple. He’s been building customer trust as well as the content providers have been destroying it. As powerful as any band, Steve’s now got a tribe of early adopters who will buy anything Apple offers, and will tell everybody who doesn’t have it how great it is. Come on, if you haven’t been harangued by an Apple fan, you live in isolation in the Arctic.”

You might begin to wonder if Google can get their product quality and customer support and overall customer experience standards up anywhere near Apple’s. The risk is that Google’s brand continues to lose momentum as less-than-stellar products with the Android operating system that Google’s forever going to be increasingly associated with.

Yes, let’s talk Android, that other app universe that increasingly seems to be Apple’s ONLY competition in the incredibly important, profitable and quickly growing US smartphone market. Speaking of which…

“When buying discount electronics, there’s a delicate balance consumers have to consider between expense and quality. If a device doesn’t cost much, some faults can be forgiven. Sometimes, however, it’s not worth even the small amount of money you forked over for it. Sadly, Augen’s $149 GenTouch78 falls in the latter category.”

"Best customer experience of any corporation" ---  What heady BS talk. A few decades ago a guy would have been embarrassed to talk like that. You simply bought something and if you liked it, you liked it. A guy might have gotten effusive about his new Corvette but he would never have said, "Chevy gave me the best customer experience on the planet"

I am making a comment about the denegation of the English language

I see your point, but you would have to admit that 10 years ago the demands from the average user were NOT as technologically mature. Many people did not have high speed internet or facebook or even a PC, just 10 years ago.

I agree. A few decades ago they would have said "in the world" or "on Earth" rather than "on the planet." I see this as another purposeful Noam Chomsky-like ploy to dehumanize people as simply accidental inhabitants on a little blue marble, one among zillions of others.

That makes each of us less significant and easier to herd like cattle.

I have an android, and I love it. I set up a friend’s iPhone (and I use both macs and windows pcs at home and work) and I was very impressed.

Instead of saying Android hurts Google, I would make a case that AT+T kills Apple. My droid uses Verizon and it’s great - I have access to everything Google at good speed with no disconnections. If anything, the Droid/Verizon makes Google look good.

My iPhone friends all hate AT+T because of the poor 3g access and constant disconnections, but love the phone.

Best of both worlds would be an iPhone on Verizon’s network, but Verizon seems to have thrown its lot in with Google.

I have an Android X. We just spent 3 weeks traveling around the country, camping in our Airstream trailer. The phone and service never failed.

However, when/if iPhone goes to Verizon, I’ll switch to iPhone, but not one second sooner.

Actually I have Tilt2 on ATTs network and I love ATT. The speeds are faster than Verizon too. Plus I can tether and talk at the same time.

But what we recently found out about the iPhone it’s an Ipod Touch first and phone second. And in many cases it’s Apple giving ATT a bad name. But since ATT already had a bad impression on the market it was more easily to believe ATT was screwing up and not the iPhone.

Must be locality-based. Even people with regular cell phones get constant disconnects and poor coverage with AT+T. The joke is that it’s no accident that their company logo is the death star.

My Step-Father contacted me a few days ago, with a list of questions - basically, “will the iPhone do this?”. The list was pretty extensive, and several of the items on the list, I don’t have experience with (though a subsequent investigation showed that, yes - though some require apps). He had made the decision to step up to a smartphone and had narrowed the search down to:

Apple iPhone
or
Samsung Captivate (Android-based)

He finally decided on the Samsung. I am anxious for the opportunity to compare side-by-side. I handled a Captivate at the AT&T store while waiting for my iPhone 4 this past Saturday. Nice screen, nice size, and the phone was very responsive-— BUT -—My biggest concern - all plastic - and the screen material - if I didn’t know any better, I would say it will catch scratches like a tomcat’s favorite clawing post...

Should be interesting. So far, I am happy with my iPhone 4.
