Unlike other family members, 7-year-old Logan Coleman doesnt have an aversion to snakes.
Clutching a handful of the plastic toy reptiles, he says his favorite is the venomous African black mamba.
He likes rattlesnakes, too, he said. Except for the one that bit him Wednesday in his Spring Arbor Township backyard in a rare encounter with Michigans only venomous snake.
Logan screamed and said, Mom, you have to come see what bit me, his mother, Kimberly Coleman, recalled Friday while standing near the familys swing set where they found the snake coiled in the grass.

Nothing but the common snapping turtles up here but we learn to keep our appendages away from their mouths anyway.
Uncle who owned farm in Western NJ used to see copperheads
and swamp rattlers all the time near his farm
Once my aunt was hanging wash out when copperhead came slithering up
Called my uncle who ran it over with pickup......
Lime Lake near Paw Paw ?
Spring Arbor Michigan.
Why one of the volunteer gardeners at the arboretum hasn't been hit is beyond me, God must really love them.
You’re probably killing a lot of harmless and beneficial critters, don’t brag about it.
There is a lime Lake near Paw Paw also.....:o)
Good bluegills....
To tell you the truth, I probably wouldn’t kill one if I found it here in the yard. I’d probably catch it and take it over to the state land and turn it loose. I would be sure to let my neigbors know to keep an eye out because they have kids that play in the yard.
The only native lizard we have in Michigan is the 5 lined skink and I’ve only seen two of those in nearly 46 years. As I understand it, they aren’t terribly rare, just secretive and quick. Kinda like fox.
Lime Lake near Spring arbor is cut in half by a railroad bed. Big bluegills on the smaller side.
Yep... Good eating. Miss the smelt run as well....
Yep, most city dwellers just don’t get it. Being conservative and living in the country doesn’t mean I’m here to slaughter all the wildlife I find. I’m here because I love the wildlife and won’t kill any of it unless it threatens me. I don’t even hunt these days but I still love to get out in the woods.
Even here in my tiny town I like being able to look out and see wild turkeys in the neighbor’s yard or out front and find great blue or green herons perched in the willow over the water.
He was 7. That’s 2 years younger than I was when I tried to grab a water moccasin. My parents took me and the snake to the hospital (the snake for identification). I got anti-venom and tetanus shots and then a surgeon spent over an hour removing broken snake teeth and fangs from my wound. That was 54 years ago in Annapolis, Maryland.
Most of the birds I watch and photograph wouldn't be here without gators, everything is linked.
If kids are going to be outside you start teaching them early.
Basically an Eastern Diamondback, right?
Largest viper in North America, IIRC.
Thanks! Definitely not a diamondback.
There’s a spot that I pass while running that has tall swamp grass and I’ve heard a rattle a couple of times as I ran by. I know a rattle sound because I’ve stumbled upon rattelers when hunting out east years ago. Never seen a massasauga, seen lots of garter snakes though.
Holy cow! Did he break off his fangs off or did you trying to rip him off?
Tops my best viper story hands down, and I got some good’uns.
