Anyone else having problems with Firefox in regards to slow response...
08/18/10 | me

Posted on 08/18/2010 6:17:56 PM PDT by Doogle

..over the last few days I've noticed when clicking on a link sometimes the response is quick, sometimes slower,or sometimes I have to click twice for the link to open the new site. I know firefox has been having problems with Flash player, does anyone know if this is related? My mouse settings are the same as they always were and it seems to effect some sites more than others....any ideas?

I can’t see Facebook with FF...I have to add this annoying little “s” next to the http and then it will open. I have no idea how to fix it either.

Well, following one of the suggestions on this thread, I opened Tools, add-ons and uninstalled all those that were marked with the red exclamation marks (not compatible with v. 6.0.18) then clicked on the banner restart FF and it has been nothing but great so far. I was having all kinds of trouble with it being slow and locking up, but so far so good.

I’ve been having similar problems with sluggishness and glitchy mouse pointer the last few days in my WinXP.

I’ve reloaded the OS partition to previous versions and it happens still.

I’ve uninstalled new and recently upgraded programs, but none of them seemed to be the problem.

I think I finally isolated it to a recent upgrade to the telephone peripheral — MagicJack. It had an upgrade a few days ago, and the glitching started. Then, it had a second recent upgrade. Now, it won’t stay loaded. When it is loaded, I’ve notice it frequently running several ‘rundll.exe’ files when the glitching occurs.

It unloaded itself again this afternoon, and the recurring rundll’s stopped.

So, I am guessing that that is the problem I have.

FF has become a resource hog. I’m sick of it.

That has been a persistent problem with FF since about version 0.7. The Mozilla people claim it is the add-ons that are at fault, so they won't fix the problem.

Mozilla has improved it some in later additions, but it still eats up memory and won't release it.

I have tried several 'memory release' add-ons and programs with minimal results.

I did recently install a memory cleaning program that runs in the background and does seem to help: http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem.

“I’ve used firefox for years and love it, but it takes forever to open when I first start the computer.”

Go in and disable practically all extensions and plugins that you did not install yourself. You’ll see a ton of Microcrap ones. Disable all of those. Basically, disable everything but java platform, mozilla default, and shockwave in plugins. Even disable adobe, as pdfs will still open automatically via external adobe reader.

Disable everything in extensions you didn’t install.

You’ll be amazed at how much faster it loads.
