Since the first iPhone rolled off the assembly line in 2007, it has been amazing to see how quickly the mobile device took off around the world. Now comes word that Apple itself owns a 48% share of the global mobile phone market in terms of gross profit.
This news comes from asymco, which bills itself as an app production studio and an industry analysis advisory. According to them, Apple far outpaces both Nokia (22%) and RIM (17%), which are number two and three on the list, respectively.

I think some of this was being discussed on another thread.
But, I think this article is more sussinct and direct about the key elements of the whole debate.
PROFIT.
Who cares if you have 30% marketshare if it means 2% profit.
5% of that market and 50% profit is 400% better.
Then when you add in the market for Verizon in just a few months...
Sales will TRIPLE as soon as they can legally leave ATT.
If the iPhone was to cost over $1,000, iPhones would still be sold by the millions. In fact, I think all Apple products are way underpriced for what they do - but I'm not complaining!
But I really WOULD by THIS type of Product if it was updates to 2010 tech.
I had this in 2000.
LOVED it
I like the current keyboard. I’ve become quite fast on it.
Above all, NO Blackberry type keyboard!
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
Apple made lots of $$$ last night as the wife pulled the trigger on a 2010 iMac for her wunnerful hubby (that would be me). What an amazing device this is.
I just took delivery of the 21” model a cole of weeks ago.
Nice!
I'd love to see that too. I haven't found a hardware keyboard I like though. Blackberry has the absolute worst, the LG Touch was okay but made the device too bulky. The feedback of the soft keyboard showing your choice above your finger works better than these. Apple has been working on spot physical feedback, such as raising something under your finger to bump it. That would be cool, since as I'm a touch typist feedback is important to me.
That is because they are just ripping off us Fanbois on the gay left.
:-)
Incidentally, I just read that Apple is the only computer company who does not make political contributions.
Everyone likes to point out how Steve Jobs gave a seat on the board to Al Gore....
But I think the evidence points out how this is one of those “Keep your enemies closer” things.
That is easy to explain. Al Gore is peddling manmade global warming and what is cooler than an Apple product. Gore had been had.
The one thing that limits Apple is that they don't make cheap crap products. They sell to the top-end of the marketplace, and the majority of the market (in number of units) is below their gaze. They choose (I think wisely) to avoid the low-end pit, leaving it to others to slug it out in the mudhole.
And for that they are endlessly mocked, because they don't sell as many units as the other guys.
Articles about numeric-unit marketshare are interesting, but they're basically not about business success. Articles about profit are about business success.
And Apple continues to succeed at a time when all others struggle.
They’d make even more profit if they would go with a Verizon product. </ gripe>
I think that is imminent.
I had been with Verizon for about 4 years before I switched to AT&T for the iPhone. So far, no problems. However, I’m already with AT&T for my home DSL and my wireless 3G iPad connection.
There’s are simple reasons for Gore being on the board: he’s very high-profile, has extensive foreign and domestic government connections, and has credibility with the powerful environmental lobby. He was a senior advisor to Google and they were courting him too. IMHO, Gore was shopping himself around to see who could give him the best deal and most prestige after his failed run for president. Jobs lost Larry Ellison from the board and needed to fill the slot, so he wooed Gore for it and won.
Yes, people like Jobs are libs. But don’t forget they run multi-billion dollar companies and want to keep profits up and shareholders happy. Remember all legal the scrutiny Microsoft has undergone? For all we know it’s Gore’s connections that are keeping that away from Apple.
