Found a really great online resource for ammunition (ammo).

Have been purchasing from them for a while and their selection, prices and customer service is simply outstanding.

I was hoping that the had a good deal on .458 Win but it looks like I will still be paying $3.00 a round.

Tula was the first hit on the Lucky Gunner website for .223 as well, and was their lowest price item. The results were similar for other brands like Federal and Winchester. If I’m going to put 100 rounds or so through my 9mm or through my 5.56, I wouldn’t hava a problem shooting Herter’s (Russian) or Tula etc. I just make sure I clean the gun well afterwards. If you are shooting more exotic hard-to-find ammo, then LG is probably a great resource. About all I shoot right now is 9mm, .38 and .223, and when I looked at those options at LG I noticed that the prices were higher than what I normally see at Cabela’s. No big deal. Thanks for sharing the resource; it is one that I’ll keep in mind, especially if I have trouble finding something at Cabela’s.

"Tula...seriously? I would never put a Tula round in anything I have."
Sadly, I can't find a source for 7.52 X 54r anywhere else, unless I want to buy it in a 2000-round tin that does not include opener. I gotta have the opener, as my teeth are getting worn out.

7.52 should read 7.62.

You should load your own for that piece. The .458 is a lot more versatile than you would think. 45-70 or 45-90 load equivalents make a lot more sense for North American big game (although you really need a 1 in 22 twist with the cast bullets), and full blown .458 loads will cost a fraction of shelf prices. My .375-338 (same case as the .458)costs me about $1.25 with the 300 grain Hornady bullets.

Thanks for taking the time to post good info.

Does anyone know of a good site for once fired brass? New brass? Rifle and pistol. I like the prices at http://www.brasshound.com but have never ordered from them.

The opener solution is easy. Take a medium-sized flat-head screwdriver and hammer, knock a hole in the top of the box at the edge. Work a short distance (about 2 inches) down the box, then wedge the screwdriver up in the middle of the cut to raise the metal of the lid a bit. Use a pair of sidecutters and start clipping the metal. Once you get a piece big enough, grab it with the sidecutters and twist like rolling spaghetti onto a fork. Takes me about 2-3 minutes to get all my ammo out of the tin.

As far as the rounds go, I get mine in 440-round tins from Cheaper than Dirt for about $95 plus shipping (about $25 for ammo only). Some of the Russian surplus tins have been reported to come with an opener. However, neither the Russion nor Hungarian ammo I bought had the opener.

It used to be available everywhere but since the military stopped sharing their used brass it has become very hard to find reliably. I used to see it on gunbroker but that has slowed down a lot.

Good luck with it...if you find a good spot let me know please.

Thanks.

Not liking their selection of .45 LC, but always good to have another resource to go to. Thanks!

Awhile back someone posted a website that listed ammo by caliper and price with price in descending order. The prices were gathered from all over, Cabela's Lucky Gunner,Cheaper Than Dirt etc. Does anyone know the name of that website?
