Defending champion Tiger Woods, right, continued to struggle on the golf course during the opening round of the Bridgestone Invitational on Thursday in Akron, Ohio. Woods, ranked No. 1 in the world and seven-time winner of the event, missed nine of 14 fairways and needed 32 putts at Firestone Country Club as he posted a four-over-par 74, 10 shots off the pace of first-round leader Bubba Watson.
Phil Mickelson is in a four-way tie for second, two shots behind Watson at four-under 66. Also tied for second are Kenny Perry, Adam Scott and Graeme McDowell.

Agreed. The #1 thing the Tiger fan boys would call Phil was a “phony.” Like a goody goody. Over at Golf Wrx which has golfers posting to a forum. Lots of fan boys and also good golfers and golf fans.
Some jerk would always post a story that they heard from a friend of a friend who knew a guy who knew a caddy that Phil wasn’t totally friendly to all the other players. It was idiotic. The nice Phil image was a fake etc etc. Just nasty stuff that was not true.
Tiger never signed autographs for fans and kids.
Phil will spend hours signing autographs especially for kids. Let me tell you - I probably would not do it either. Kids for a half hour - idiot adults - I would say “grow up.”
The sports media is SO liberal and disgusting. I cancelled TV but ESPN is the worst. Just sickening. Polictically correct to the hilt.
LOL! Racist white golf balls cannot find the fairway. I suck but I can hit more that 5 out of 14 fairways in a round. 32 putts! I think I could do better than that.
Pro golf is pretty brutal. You produce or you are out. If he is falling apart - he will be gone in a year. I do not dislike him just his fans and the media who glorify him.
I still think Hogan had the best pass thru the ball I have ever seen.....but I’m an old timer. I suppose younger FReepers do not even know or care about a great golfer from the distant past. How ‘bout you Frantzie....ever get the chance to follow Bantam Ben around in his prime for 18?
One Canadian kid on youtube who is very good goes through and does Ben's swing as well as Mo (Canadian savant) and others. Talking about Ben's secret that it's “in the dirt” etc.
Personally - I think Ben may have been the greatest. No man - no man ever had his body destroyed in a car wreck where he almost died and still played amazing golf while in pain due to a broken body.
His accident was 1940/50s car safety and medical technology. Dove in front of his wife a second before they hit the bus to save her.
I really need to spend the time to go through and find some video of his full rounds.
Texas turned out a lot of gentlemen golfers who grew up poor and became great like Ben and Byron Nelson. I think the only one who comes close to Ben might be Jack or Bobby Jones. When I was little Jack was on but TVs were terrible. You could not see too much. Jack would just crush the ball.
As a purist - Ben Hogan swing was just incredible. Other good ones are Freddy Couples or Ernine Els the big easy plus others.
I agree, I have a very straight drive (plus fairway and iron shots). I’m 66, don’t have the distance, but hit the ball very straight. And it’s because the club face is square at impact.
My driver swingspeed is in the 85 mph range. Not fast, and I drive about 185 yards. But it’s in the fairway more often than not (Yesterday, I had only one drive in the rough).
If I can do it, anyone can with practice.
“I fail to see how there can be any drug that makes you hit the ball straight. Long, maybe, but not straight.”
Focus. Is there a drug that can cause that?
His fits and bloated face made me suspect steroids, plus his doctor's legal problems. His willingness to pay a huge sum to his wife for her silence is another red flag. Another affair would not matter. But drug use would.
The PGA should stand before a jury on this one. They built tour events to take advantage of TiHgHer's length and strength out of the rough. They promoted this synthetic golfer to be their billion dollar cash cow. Every human, golfer or not, recognized him which meant billions for the industry. They then pretended to implement drug testing and hung a fringe player when anyone with a good pair of glasses could see who the abuser was.
Well the spotlight is on the PGA and their golden goose now. Its great to see him lose, but I hope the true investigative journalists start sniffing around PGA headquarters.
Jack’s record is safe.
Bingo! The testimony with the ROID doctor is the only thing scaring him off using PEDs (roids & HGH) - it is not the PGA he is worried about.
I totally agree that the one fringe player was set up to be hung out to dry. You are right about his ability to blast out of the rough.
Tim Finchem should step down at the PGA. He is obviously off the juice and is playing like absolute sh*t. He would have missed the cut today if they had a cut at this tourney.
I like Phil in large part because he has been the pinata for all these years by politically correct sports media. The dumb white guy like all of Madison Ave’s dumb white guy commercials. Like the AP/NBC/et al spewing how the black shooter in CT was driven to mass murder by racism. Same sh*t.
I ran the driving distances from yesterday and Tiger “ain’t” that long anymore.
Friday
Bubba 313
Phil 310
Rory 302 (he is a small kid too)
Nick Watney 303
Lucas 296
Tiger 290
Phil is driving the ball 60 feet further aka 20 yards? Tiger is hit 36% of his fairways yesterday? Phil was I think 57%. Very good is about 65%. No roids - no forearm strength for Tiger.
My guess is he is off the juice now and without it he would wash out of the tour in one year except for exemptions.
The Tiger fan boys at Golf Wrx are saying it is his divorce and other BS. Phil’s wife and mother were diagnosed with cancer last year, he took two months off and played great golf. Tiger off the juice is the problem. The Golf WRX fanboys make endless excuses and one idiot said it was like being told there was no Santa Claus!
I can do a damn site better at work with my entire family in a cancer ward than if I had to go through a divorce.
I’ve experienced both. It’s not even a contest. Divorce is nasty business.
The media endlessly fawn over and make excuses for Tiger. I cancelled TV and could not watch the golf channel. It is just like Obama.
The fits and anger are roids or HGH. The current and past bloated face sounds like Roids/HGH aka PEDs.
The wife’s prenup is probably iron clad so she would have gotten a modest settlement. I bet she does know about the drugs. If that came out he would be done and PGA and Nike should go down with him.
Looks like Tiger’s lost his mojo . . . and maybe pickup an STD or two.
pickup=picked up
I now suspect the bloated face was from having it sat on the night before.
I think it is a banned drug for sports that test. For example sharpshooting. Big advantage.
As for focus
How about adderall. When I take it, it sure helps me focus.
Looks like Butch Harmon dumped that loser just at the right time. Maybe Steve the caddie will be next to abandon him.
Actually the buzz is he might go with Lee Westwood’s caddy because Lee is out.
Butch has a little bit of an ego but I like him. He is a straight shooter. He and Phil have a good relationship and Butch is the coach you want. Butch offered to help Daly and dumped him cause Daly had not kicked booze. Daly needed tough love and finally hit rock bottom.
I doubt Butch would ever take Tiger back. Hank Haney insinuated that Tiger is cheap.
The idiot Tiger fan boys gave Hank Haney all sorts of hell cause Tiger was not playing well. Without Haney, Tiger is even worse. I think Haney is an honorable guy who was treated badly. Rush is going to be on his show to help Rush’s golf game. I cancelled TV but saw a still somewhere. Rush put all of his weight back on it looks like.
The Curse of Eldrick.
