You mean thermal?

A number of companies make them, though most won't sell to the average Joe. They're also expensive.

This Trijicon ATWS starts at about $17,000 however.

I’ll add it to my Christmas list!

I am speaking literally. Open season on wild pigs and coons destroy my sweetcorn. Possums are also a problem.

Can’t afford an optic that costs 8 times what my first new car cost. Thanks for the suggestion.

Rather than a night scope, I recommend trip flares.

BTW, the scope above was instrumental in a drug bust by the local sheriff's department last Sunday.

Check your local laws and stay legal. Night vision for protecting your garden, checking for illegal activity around your place and etc is a great tool.

It greatly reduces sportsmanship in hunting and most likely illegal unless you're hunting for survival.

Putting a salt lick out and back lighting it with a motion switch wouldn’t work too well for queers but it’s a winner for photographing or poaching deer, coyotes, hogs, etc.

Consider a solar powered fence charger. It's much cheaper and and more humane and you don't have to get up in the middle of the night to make your rounds.

After you harvest all you want/need, turn it off and let the animals have the rest. You may need them for a protein source someday.

Of course you may be like me and just need an excuse to buy one... ;)

The problem with this is that it doesn't permanently solve the problem. It just moves it to the neighbors property.

Hi Joe,

Great tips all. I just bought a Trijicon CQB battle sight, which sits nicely upon my AR. Any practical thoughts about mounting NV on the AR platform? I want it for security. I won’t pretend it’s for 4 footed animals.
I really like some of the other suggestions in the FReepers comments below. Thanks guys!

I'd think about getting a dedicated weaver upper as mentioned above with a flash suppressor if that's legal in your locale.

Some targets will be 30 yards and some might be 150-200 yards.

If he's shooting .223 and at those ranges at night, I don't think neighbors are a problem and most people with real gardens already use an electric fence.

Roger that Errant.

BTW, should I go to the sellers store and pick through his stock to find the best tube? Is there that much variability between individual units as stated by a poster above?

Last question, would you utilize this particolar unit on a 223 AR, or a M1A 308?

I could put it on either an FN/FAL, or the M1A. Which would cost the least to mount?

"Any practical thoughts about mounting NV on the AR platform?"

Well, the aforementioned AN/PVS-14 can go on a cantilever mount in front of the ACOG, and this can also be quickly removed and mounted to a helmet or headstrap mount if you want to use it off the weapon. At least, I think it mounts in front, due to the ACOG's extremely short eye releif. I've only used it with an EOTech, and on that rifle the NVD went behind the sight; same for the Comp-M.

The PVS-18 also does this, I think. If you can find one for sale. $:-)

I don't know what other mfgrs. equivalents of these sights are, but there's all sort of gear out there nowadays. You definitely want to do your homework.

STD, buy from a reputable dealer that will allow maybe at least a 30 day return policy. The unit above has a limited lifetime warranty.

When you get it, look for any signs of a burn in that affects the image greatly. All of these scopes have a little. Never expose it to any direct or daylight without the cover in place.

would you utilize this particolar unit on a 223 AR, or a M1A 308?

Absolutely, you only need a weaver mount and the scope will handle the recoil of a 308. Your range is only limited by the amount of IR or visible light you can throw.

could put it on either an FN/FAL, or the M1A.

I'm not familiar of costs for adapting either of the above rifles to accept a weaver scope but it shouldn't be that expensive. A quick yahoo/google search for either rifle name combined with "weaver mount" should give you plenty of options.

One word of caution, eye relief is minimumal so heavy recoil could present a physical challenge to the shooter.

Thermal Hog Hunting

There are thermal scopes available for around 10K.

the only problem with thermal is the “Crossover” period where the heated ground/veg washes out targets and makes it a little harder to be precise. Both Night vision and thermal have their weaknesses, so as I tell my wife, that’s why I need BOTH!

I met a farmer in FL who hunts hogs with a .50cal Barrett. Not much meat left over. Talk about fun!!
