PROVO — The former BYU student accused of attacking a woman with a stun gun pleaded guilty Tuesday to a lessened degree of aggravated assault.

Stetson Geo Hallam, 20, had been charged with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony, following an April 6 incident that he claimed was an April Fool's joke, according to a police affidavit filed in 4th District Court.

Charges say Hallam, the victim's home teacher in their LDS Church ward, pressured the 19-year-old woman to meet him so he could "give her a gift."

The woman told police Hallam waited outside her Provo apartment for her to return, then asked her to go to a basement laundry room as part of a scavenger hunt.

Once in the room, Hallam attacked her with a Taser-like weapon, pinned her to the ground and tried to handcuff her, the affidavit states. Despite the electric shock, the woman began screaming and fighting back, and at one point bit Hallam's finger, according to court documents. She later told police she thought Hallam was trying to rape her.

After being bitten, Hallam released the woman, apologized, and said it was just an April Fool's joke, the affidavit states. Police found burn marks on the woman's arm from the weapon and a bite mark on Hallam's hand.

Hallam pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and obstruction of justice, second-degree felonies. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 9 and faces up to 15 years in prison.

And how, praytell, do you presume to say that Reagan separated the two?? You accuse me of assuming... The fact that he invited the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to sing at his inauguration tells me he not only valued Mormons, but didn't necessarily separate “their characteristics from their Mormonism”.

He obviously valued them, Mormon or not, in spite of or because... it matters not. I give him more credit for his intelligence.

>>”Freedom of religion has nothing to do with it.”<<

WRONG.

Freedom of religion has EVERYTHING to do with it, reagan-NOT!

Letting people worship whoever they want and how they want should be of no concern to you. That is, unless you have aligned yourselves with Satan, who also thrives on the bashing of religion and mankind's freedom to choose how they worship?

What exactly is the FreeRepublic chapter of Mormon Haters, Inc. hoping to gain from all the obvious coordinated hatred directed towards the LDS church?

You were born about 150 years too late. I'm sure you and your cult would have raced to Nauvoo, IL to join in the ‘fun’ of burning good folks out of their homes, killing their babies, livestock and other outright treacherous acts against innocent people.

One FReeper pointed out via private email that your group is becoming more and more radical and violent in your postings. Having been active here for nearly ten years and watching the progression of your group's increasing anger and abnormal rage, I have to agree.

It's getting out of hand and it's almost reached the point where you all need to be watched more closely. I am not alone in my observation of your actions.

Jim, Free Republic is the greatest site on the internet for discussing political issues that endanger our freedoms. You don't know how much we appreciate what you're doing for our country. Thank you. It is NOT a forum for hate against certain religions that this gang doesn't agree with. Please tell them to take it somewhere else or tone it down a bit.

This group constantly replies that they don't hate Mormons, just MormonISM. Isn't that parallel to saying that someone hates murder, but not the murderer?

Jim, I thank you in advance for your consideration and unbiased opinion on this matter.

God Bless America, Mormons and all.

Why are young woman “taught, counseled” by young men? Shouldn't it be young women teaching counseling” young women?

Mormons have two systems for instructing women. One of them is called Visiting Teaching and the other is called Home Teaching. Visiting Teaching is done only by women to women and visiting teachers report to the Relief Society President who then may report to the bishop. Home Teaching is something that can only be done by a priesthood holder, which means only men can do it. These men can teach both men and women. A home teacher's job is generally to teach short lessons and keep tabs on people for the Elder's Quorum President who then tell the bishop and stake president what's going on in the ward. The Home Teacher is a mechanism intended to make sure that every woman in the ward who doesn't have access to priesthood blessings and administrations for the sick etc can ask the home teacher for one. At BYU, I am pretty sure that the Home Teacher thing is also used by some ward leaders to get the college students married off to each other too.

“And how, praytell, do you presume to say that Reagan separated the two??”

... EXACTLY. This is exactly what you were doing in reverse. Glad you can now see it.

“You accuse me of assuming...”

... EXACTLY. Because your post carried presuppositions that were not proven. I asked you for some evidence of your claim, but you chose not to show any.

“The fact that he invited the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to sing at his inauguration”

... PROOF that he did the inviting or that it was his idea? Perhaps his right-hand guy who recommended all the mormons suggested he could arrange for the MTC to perform and Reagan accepted - he was gracious and inclusive. How it happened, I do not know.

He demonstrated his graciousness by referring to them as “America’s Choir” even though they are not.

“...tells me he not only valued Mormons”

... PROOF for this assumption? Maybe he liked the music.

“...but didn’t necessarily separate “their characteristics from their Mormonism”.”

... PROOF for this assumption? All we know is that there were a number of mormons who were hired in the administration and that the MTC performed at his ceremony. Everything else is speculation.

[as an aside, maybe Reagan went behind closed doors and told his closest confidants, “HEY! Make sure you bring me a lot of mormon job applications. I just love those folks!” But, without evidence of it, you are making assumptions. FRiend, if you can demonstrate those assumptions, great... but none of that is the basis to evaluate the truth claims of the religion of mormonism.]

“He obviously valued them, Mormon or not, in spite of or because... it matters not.”

... EXACTLY. It doesn’t matter, which is why using it to promote mormonism was ineffective. I value the lives of the mormon friends I’ve had over the years. Their religion, contradicts the Truth God revealed in the Bible, so I reject it.

I’m glad we can at least agree on Ronaldus Maximus. I can only hope Obama serves to bring us another Thatcher or Reagan.

Best,
ampu

Sorry to bust in to the thread so late, however IMHO Freedom of Religion means to me that I have the right to be whatever I want to be without regard to what others define as “religion”.

For instance Christianity is very fine for believers in such, however in the big picture there is a more major and substantive thing that needs further understanding. I haven’t found it yet so my search continues.

Here’s what I know so far: Mormonism is a farce.

I was born into the religion and suffered all the social pressures of the process. My entire family continues to fall for the process. Not me.

>>”They scream free speech at the same time yelling shut up.”<<

I’m certain that was directed at me. If you could have someone read who “screamed” free speech you will find it was reagan-NOT, not me, as implied.

I mentioned “freedom of religion” and you (using your liberal tactics) misconstrued that into something I said. I can see why your head is spinning. You are so confused and delirious that you can’t remember who said what.

Smart folks here are beginning to see through your lies and falsifying the facts, changing words in articles to fit your sick little obsession with Mormons. We’re on to you!

Try using your time to verbally attack our enemies, e.g. radical Muslims, Marxist presidents etc. and not Patriotic God worshiping Americans.

“Letting people worship whoever they want and how they want should be of no concern to you. That is, unless you have aligned yourselves with Satan, who also thrives on the bashing of religion and mankind’s freedom to choose how they worship?”

... I don’t think you could come across as more extreme than you did in this sentence. You can worship whoever, however many of them, and whenever you wish. No one has ever suggested anything else.

“What exactly is the FreeRepublic chapter of Mormon Haters, Inc. hoping to gain from all the obvious coordinated hatred directed towards the LDS church?”

... I’ve yet to meet a single person here who “hates mormons”

“One FReeper pointed out via private email that your group is becoming more and more radical and violent in your postings.”

... Show it, if you’re going to claim it. Show a violent post. Show an extreme post. Talk is cheap. Show it. Should be easy.

“Having been active here for nearly ten years and watching the progression of your group’s increasing anger and abnormal rage, I have to agree.

“Having been active here for nearly ten years and watching the progression of your group’s increasing anger and abnormal rage, I have to agree.”

... If you agree with that stupid statement, show your evidence of “abnormal rage” and “increasing anger”. I see loads of mormon anger though... like your post I am responding to.

“It’s getting out of hand and it’s almost reached the point where you all need to be watched more closely.”

Maybe Jim can install video cameras....

“Jim, Free Republic is the greatest site on the internet for discussing political issues that endanger our freedoms.”

... do you not include freedom of expression? Freedom to practice religions other than your own?

“This group constantly replies that they don’t hate Mormons, just MormonISM. Isn’t that parallel to saying that someone hates murder, but not the murderer?”

...that is a stupid claim. It is like saying we hate rape, but support rape victims.

I said my “FAMILY HISTORY”. Quit distorting words to fit your agenda.

What?

Your 'family' is not a THING?
