If I found a pot full of gold coins, I would notify the authorities too because I know it would be some kind of a sting.

Dam, a 100% tax on the coins. The Indian revenuers must have taken lessons from Stalin, Mao, and Obama.

Yeah...ummm...we’re gonna have to go ahead and ask you to fill out a form 1099 for those gold coins...sorry, it says so in the health care bill. What’s that? This was in India? Doesn’t matter. The health care bill says you have to fill out a form 1099 for any gold coins bought or sold in the U.S. or as a result of an ancient discovery in India. It sucks I know.

When I was in the Army in Germany, there was a group of Brothers from Abbey Gruessau, who had been displaced by the Nazis and then the Russians and were in residence at the disused Catholic cathedral in Bad Wimpfen. In digging for restoration and gardening they had unearthed a several small caches of Roman Coins, which collectively were a rather large cache. (The site, on the Neckar River had been the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire in the Third Century).

The chaplain to the brothers was our Catholic chaplain and he kept the coins rather casually in a drawer in his desk, which he showed me. I really wished he hadn’t shown or told me about it, because God knows who else must have known. I have no idea what the local authoritues knew or thought of the situation.

Thanks Palter.
The coins, which had markings in Urdu, had been handed over to District Collector R. Sudalaikannan.

Along with a team of police personnel, the revenue officials rushed to the village and took possession of the coins, each weighed around 400 milligrams.

Damn, must be the Indian division of the IRS.

Just another illustration of why:
When you find a treasure, just shut up about it, and keep it hidden away or sell it secretly.
