When I was in the Army in Germany, there was a group of Brothers from Abbey Gruessau, who had been displaced by the Nazis and then the Russians and were in residence at the disused Catholic cathedral in Bad Wimpfen. In digging for restoration and gardening they had unearthed a several small caches of Roman Coins, which collectively were a rather large cache. (The site, on the Neckar River had been the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire in the Third Century).

The chaplain to the brothers was our Catholic chaplain and he kept the coins rather casually in a drawer in his desk, which he showed me. I really wished he hadn’t shown or told me about it, because God knows who else must have known. I have no idea what the local authoritues knew or thought of the situation.
