context: My older brother, in spite of many fine qualities, is a real knee-jerk liberal - what I call a "Doonesbury Democrat" since he seems to look at things like that comic strip's author.
At his house I noticed a notepad (like the ones drug reps hand out to doctors) in the kitchen with the following heading on each page:
"Stand with Barack Obama for lasting change -
Silence the GOP lies"
And I just thought, doesn't this putrid sentiment just about sum up the leftist outlook on political discourse? Not "I disagree with what you say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it!", but rather "I disagree with what you say and I will use any means at my disposal to silence you!.
So this is where they're coming from at the grass-roots level. It really makes me sick. No room for dissent! Silence the opposition.
I finally found a way to articulate, via analogy, why I don’t care if the R’s take over congress in November.
Switching party control in government now is like changing crews AFTER the Titanic hit the iceberg. It may change how effective the lifeboats are used, but the ship is still going down and there are not enough lifeboats.
IOW, it’s pretty irrelevant who is in control.
My father was very much like that and it probably killed him.
So why not name it, Socialist Democrats want to silence the citizenry?
Tin foil's a must in any leftist household.
who will pay for all that older brother wants
?????
Speak to him in what he claims as important:

Has he called you a racist yet?
Thats funny. Maybe we should send NAACP, Senate Dems, House Dems, MSNBC, CNN etc. rolls of tin foil. signed right wing conspirators Im on board!!!!
An interesting idea. Do we have any historians out there who can list 18th - 20th century uprisings and what became of them?
Ask him specifically which Republican lies he has heard, and enjoy the sound of chirping crickets.
This works with most liberals!
Your older brother is a doofus.
Sorry....
The book How To Stage a Military Coup (Hebditch & Connor, ISBN 978-3-60239-375-2) has an appendix listing approximately 150 military coups from the 1960s to date. Most were failures. However, these were not popular uprisings. In most cases they were a would-be dictator trying to replace an incumbent dictator.
My own book (see tag line) lists a few revolutions, some successful and some unsuccessful, and discusses the reasons for success or failure.
And see if he agrees with it.
>>I agree that if the GOP goes in “business as usual”, we’re probably still in trouble. <<
No, that is not what I am saying. To use another analogy, the party in charge is the “bus driver” and we are on a bus going 70 miles an hour. The driver just looked up from his text message to see the bumper of a STOPPED semi 100 feet ahead. It really doesn’t matter how skilled the driver is, we’re gonna rear end the truck. Hard.

This problem has been AT LEAST 37 years in the making. There is no human solution to this. All we can do is, (to return to the Titanic analogy) use the lifeboats as efficiently as possible and make it as painless as possible.
But it’s gonna hurt. For many it already is.
>>
The reason we are in trouble now is there are too many people who have just thrown up their hands and cried “uncle”.<<
That is what John Galt did. I am choosing my battle. My faith is in God, not man. And man has screwed this up beyond his ability to fix it.
I expect a major war. I’m talking WWII sized war.
>>Remember, the Titanic sank because they were a) going to fast; b) weren’t watching out for the ‘bergs c) took the wrong route. Maybe those things have been our problem too.<<
This.
Except this ship did it for over 100 years and it just got more and more irresponsible as time went on. We’ve now hit the iceberg and, well, we all know how it ends.
I’m holding out to be one of the “Molly Browns” though. ;)
