So why should I PAY for a phone when they are going to make all this money from me? MSFT has enough cash ... they should just give the phones away for free.

... So why should I PAY ...

Because MS developed the technology, MS is marketing the technology, and MS is BIG.

Unless a competitor markets a phone more to your liking, that’s what you are stuck with if you want to use their technology.
It’s a buy/no buy choice on your part, being one of the millions of buyers who can register market pressure.

That's actually a good idea. At the very least you could have phones that sell at a discount on the condition that you have to live with the ads.

Yeah, it’s like going into True Value and seeing five gallon buckets for $4.99 with True Value’s name on it. They should give away the buckets for free if they want me to advertise for them.

You don’t actually think what you’re paying for the phone provides any profit do you? Most cellphones, smart or dumb, are sold at a loss at the time of sale. Where they turn a profit is later: contracts, fees, ad sells. It’s the razor marketing method writ digital.

you can opt out of the ads, or probably have to opt in as they have to now (yes few observe that law)

I am surprised how many opt in.
