An important part of John Adam’s ‘Brown Wall’, of national security.

Guess I'm not very observant. I didn't realize all this War of 1812 anniversary stuff was coming up until yesterday. Got a new car and it came with the new standard issue Maryland tags that went into effect just a couple weeks ago.

I suspect there were a few around, just never noticed them. Supposedly the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner at Ft. McHenry in Baltimore is going to be a big deal.

Thanks! That is the Cruz Del Sur, she was Chilean Navy cadet training ship. she was full of termites, scuttled after the filming. The schooner was the Caribe, belonged to Mike Burke of Windjammer Cruises. He had a schooner called the Mandalay too. A guy I knew only as Capt Angel ran Mandalay up on a reef, tore up the bottom. I heard that Burke was leasing out Caribe to pay for the repairs.

The Cruz had all steel standing rigging, we had to cover it all for the movie. They had 4 strand coca fiber rope from the movie Cleopatra. We would start at the top in a bosuns chair, unlay the 4 strand a bit at a time, and cover the steel cable.

We worked at the Merril Stevens Yard in Miami. The girls would cross the bridge at 12th Ave. and honk, if you couldn't get a date almost every day something was bad wrong, LOL.

They made some fake yards out of plywood, just a skin over ribs and struts. Those were the ones to be dropped on deck.

I didn't really know what I was doing, spent a long weekend in the Coconut Grove library and got up to speed. Most of the riggers ended up there with me, we all had sail experience but not what we really needed. We got it done!

“Thanks to Holmes we still have Old Ironsides.”

Without the Andrew Jackson figurehead, thankfully.

Oh, golly! I love the Constitution. What a beautiful ship. Old Ironsides is the ship that made me fall in love with windjammers.

During my younger teen years I was a very serious model builder and Old Ironsides was my favorite ship, after that were the Clipper ships like the Flying cloud, my grandfather sailed on some of the last clippers.

I have a wooden cheap model about 2’ long that I customized with some stick and peel copper tape and then scribed panel lines, of course it looks shiny but thats beside the point.

Its a unique fact that the powder magazine belowdecks is covered floor and ceiling with copper sheets to prevent any sparks.

Perhaps this winter I will try to get the very large highly detailed model, I have done a 36” model in plastic but in my golden years I want one with real wood and real metal fittings.
