KIRKLAND, Wash. - Homemade fireworks caused an explosion inside a vehicle on Interstate 405 in Kirkland on Saturday.
The Washington State Patrol says a man filled some balloons with welding gas - a combination of oxygen and acetylene gas - which is normally stored in steel cylinders.
They rubbed together, causing static electricity, and exploded. Troopers say the blast blew out the back window of the pickup truck.
They say the man, woman and 3-year-old girl in the vehicle are lucky they were not injured or even killed in the blast.
As an aside if one fills a few balloons with this mixture, ties them to a stake, and shoots them with tracer rounds the result is rather impressive.
Acetylene is fun stuff!
Stupidity will be on display this evening all across America. Alcohol will flow and fuses will be lit. Guns will be shot straight up.
Did you post a YouTube video of that experiment?
Just setting up this stunt could get a guy killed.
Hold my beer and watch this ping!
Wile E Coyote.....SUPER genius!
ping for the next H.A.T. gathering....
Here’s a fun one:
Fill a plastic soda bottle with gasoline.
Take small round candle, (or any kind for that matter)
place the lit candle in a small cardboard box with the top “vented”.
Place the bottle on top of box.
Place away from your person or others.
Ventilate bottle with rifle round of choice.
Makes for a BIG flash fire.
Oh yea, place away from flammable objects........
Happy Fourth.
If it is raining is this safe to do inside the house?
Could have been a Darwin Award contender
Calcium carbide+water= acetylene. Tons 'O' Fun for all ages.
I bought “Bangsite” and went broke, until I learned el cheapo CaCo2 did the same trick for pennies
Idiots get into trouble using Plastic garbage bags. Those Acetylene double bonds make a hell of a noise.
We used mondo trash bags, inflated w/ oxy/acetylene. Taped a long lit cigarette to it at the last moment, and set them adrift across the lake (winds were favorable, of course!)
Big bad-a-boom! Shockingly big.
The other time, we filled an inverted galvanized trash can that had been pre-wired with a spark ignitor from a gas grill.
They still remember that one: “Hooooooly sh!!!!t!!” as it took off for the treetops; wasn’t much good after re-entry...
Homemade Hindenburg!
I saw a dude take a large party balloon fill it with a mixture of acetylene and o2 . He took a cigarette lighter and despite our warnings lit it. He had no hair on his arms ,face, and the front of his head and he was smoking. Big pop and bright light.
