FaceTime and Why Apple’s Massive Integration Advantage is Just Beginning
TechCrunch ^ | Jul 3, 2010 | Steve Cheney

The success of iPhone 4 has been astonishing to witness, despite the antenna issues, proving once again that Apple has a unparalleled ability to differentiate around design and integration, not simply “features.”

Perhaps the best example of this so far is FaceTime, Apple’s take on video-calling. FaceTime makes video-calling on the Android-based Sprint HTC EVO look silly, because the EVO awkwardly requires users to sign up and download a third-party app, then launch it every time they want to talk. Normal people simply won’t do this...

“One thing is pretty evident regardless, and that is that carriers do not want devices with certain native capabilities on their 4G networks at present. That will no doubt change in the future, but that future is not yet here.”

Wireless companies do not want more bandwidth hogging devices on their network. Until they can run fiber to cell phones I don’t see that changing. The more bandwidth the higher cost to provide the service.

“Every innovation in the desktop PC, the cellphone and the MP3 player has come out of Redmond, Washington. Microsoft is known for elegant, integrated solutions and always has been. You want innovation, think Bill Gates and thank Bill Gates. “

hmmmm there must be SOME reason Microsoft owns about 98% of the desktop market and 60% of the server market worldwide.

It’s sold predominantly as a music player, and most people buy them that way. It’s the number one selling music player in many markets including the UK.

And they have the new Booklet (just released), a full-on netbook.

How about Sony? Audiovox? Haier? LG? Samsung? Acer? All make netbooks, phones, and music players. I can give you many more if you like...

Apple is not unique in their offerings nor do they lead the mobile devices section as you defined. I know you don’t want to admit it, because it would mean admitting I was right, but it’s a fact:

Apple does not lead the mobile devices market, not even close. Agreed?

“Skype is a great program.”

I’ve been reading through the posts and have to ask. Since when is having an open platform that can run apps from many companies a bad thing? I’d hate to be tied down to running apps that have to be approved by one company.

No I don’t.

Do all these other companies Sony, Audiovox, Haier? LG, Samsung, Acer have the numbers for their iPhones, iPods and iPads that Apple does?

If so, then Apple is stellar in marketing their name and company. People love their Apple products!

The App Store is incredible as well as their tech support. All around great company. I know you do not agree. You seem to love the bland. :-|

Not to mention that the only "4G" network currently available for cell phones is Sprint. The "4G" in the iPhone is not a 4G network, just the 4th generation of the device. They're still on the same old junk AT&T 3G network.

Sprint is rolling out a 4G network right now, as is Verizon (who has promised to provide full 4G coverage - equal to their current and class-leading 3G coverage - by 2013). AT&T is thinking about something named 4G, but no plans until 2011 at the earliest.

I'm sure the new iPhone label of 4G wasn't by accident...;)

“But yes, Apple makes things pretty! They just don’t sell as many of them as you claim. How you can still believe Apple dominates mobile devices is a mystery... “

Their products are pretty, pretty expensive.

$199 for the iPhone 4 is not expensive.

I was with Verizon for the last 6 years. I live in the hills [Hollywood] and had a lot of dropped calls. It was annoying but I still like Verizon.

I did stand in line for the iPhone 4 and reluctantly gave up Verizon although I have had no dropped calls with AT*T although I am expecting them.

I also have the 3G iPad with AT&T’s unlimited plan which they pulled immediately. So far, I have had GREAT reception, although i attribute that to being in a big city.

GOOD LORD!

Simply put:

Combine the iPhone, iPod, and iPad sales of Apple. Heck, add Macbooks and iMacs in there as well.

Nokia - who sells music players, phones, and computers - TOTALLY DOMINATES Apple!

Samsung sells 52 million phones a year; LG sells 30 million a year. Both TOTALLY ECLIPSE Apple in phone sales. Not even close. Even Sony, with about 15 million phone sales a year beats Apple.

How can you be so dense? Seriously, you’re going to tell me that Apple out-sells these other companies? Your OWN NUMBERS prove you wrong, and yet you still believe...

Face it, you simply cannot admit this very obvious truth: I am right, you are wrong. You’re flat out wrong. Apple does not dominate mobile devices, in no way, shape or form. Not even close.

They come behind Nokia. And if you factor in feature phones (which are smartphone-lite phones), Samsung and LG dominate Apple, too.

Your claim is flat-out provably false. Wrong.

The ONLY thing you’ve gotten right is Apple is great at marketing their name and company. Witness the hold they have on you, so wrapped in their marketing fog that you believe a lie, and when shown that it is a lie, you still believe it.

Admit it: Apple does not dominate - nor even lead - mobile device marketshare. Not even close.

Yep. I got my HTC Touch Pro2 for half that price ($99), and for my purposes it’s twice the phone.

Not to mention I can run software from lots of companies on it, and at the 2010 CES it served as a bluetooth music player and WIFI access point and PowerPoint presentation device for a half-dozen Apple engineers (whose iPhones simply didn’t work).

“$199 for the iPhone 4 is not expensive.”

True but consider thats half the price the previous version was released at.

When they start reducing price it means something.

Stop being insulting. I’ve had no problem admitting when you are right nut being a jerk is not helping you.

I do not agree because there is no company that makes great consumer products like Apple.

You mentioned Sony, which, at one time had some of the elements that I speak of. They used to have the Walkman and at one time dominated in industrial design. No more however. The demise of Sony is a story in and of itself I’m sure.

Yeah, I love Apple products, the stock market loves Apple.

Case in point. Look at the Zune. It was Microsoft’s answer to the iPod. Was there a product more hideous?

“I do not agree because there is no company that makes great consumer products like Apple.”

Apple makes pretty products. Look great and the interface in most cases is well thought out.

The other companies sell more because people like their products and price better than Apple. Apple has many people convinced that everything they sell is wonderful just because they are selling it. Its a wonderful marketing job but its clearly not industry leading.

Going back to a previous point you made. Of course Microsoft has taken some ideas from Apple. Just as Apple has taken some ideas from Microsoft. Thats what companies in a free market do, learn from their competition.

BTW the zune is better than the iPOD. Cheaper and without the horridly restrictive controls on the media. Both of my kids had ipods and moved to zune. They love em.

Again with the insults. I’ve tried to be civil and there was no call for that cheap shot.

OK, I’ve noticed a very HIGH percentage of macbots enjoying throwing money away. Pretty stupid thing to do with the economy being in this state.

What do you mean “again”? I think I only posted to you once.

I don’t know if you are cheap. Are you the person I spoke to some months ago that was cheap? That hated because the absolute bottom line was price?

You get what you pay for.

iPhone dominates in mobile devices? Really? You’re aware that Android phones is outselling iPhones, and both are a pittance compared to the heavyweights like Nokia and Motorola and LG...

I think you will find that statistic is getting old now that the iPhone4 is out... 1.7 million sold in 3 days, 2 million in five days. The white iPhone is not even available yet... And that was before AT&T sold even one iPhone4 through it's network of stores.

Apple was largely responsible for every single thing you take for granted, from the first successful desktop metaphor GUI to using a mouse, to color monitors, to, well, you name it. Everybody else fell in line behind them.

I wouldn't give Apple the credit for the use of Color Monitors... although the Apple II did have color it was very limited...

Commodore (Vic20, 64, 128 and Amiga), Atari, Texas Instruments, and even IBM, all had color before the Apple Mac did... or supported color.
