Regular readers will know that recently Ive liked to state my bias in the title of my mobile device reviews: I love the iPhone. Some will call that being a fanboy, and thats fine. But really, its just my opinion that the iPhone is hands down the best mobile device out there. If there were a better one, I would use it. But theres not. So I use the iPhone. And thats the angle I take towards these mobile device reviews. Its simple: if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Well, one finally has: iPhone 4....

If someone gave me an I Phone, I guess I would use it as a paperweight.I'm betting you'd like it.
I was a complete skeptic who didn't own any Apple products. I let my wife choose between the IPhone and other similar models and she picked the IPhone. On our move out to Arizona, it became a survival tool, for everything from finding specific locations and restaurant reviews to entertainment for the kids. I bought my own within a month. The IPhone functionality is as flexible as the apps you can load on it, and there are thousands.
I can honestly say it's a tool that's measurably improved the quality of my life.
And I don't really use the phone at all!

It’s been very helpful for me. Google maps and the address book help me a lot on the road.

Actually, the
Nokia 6600 - from 2003 - would browse the web over GPRS and 2G (all that was available - even before WIFI).
It also had a full MP3 player, video recording, integrated camera, video playback (including streaming video), email, GPS navigation, office suites, remote syncronization, etc.
All back in 2003. By the company - and on the phone OS - that completely dominates the cell phone world in sales.

I drank the Kool Aid and ordered one a few days ago. I was leaning towards Android, but we've had an AT&T family plan for years and AT&T has nothing in Android except for that stupid backflip. So I'll make do with the iPhone 4.

For the $120 a month it takes to own one, it sure better be right up there, especially since you can get a similar data plan from Sprint for $69. True you have to get by with a Blackberry, Palm, or whatever that new G4 thing they have. But is it really worth an extra $50 a month just to have a trendy phone? I don't know where you got your pricing from but it is a bit inaccurate.
The AT&T data plans are only $15 or $25 over your voice plan price...

Apple has essentially admitted they have been lying about the iPhone 's reception for years. Either they are lying now or they were lying then. Companies that cheat are not worthy of our praise. No, they have stated that there was an error in the algorithm that displayed the number of bars... not about the reception. There's a difference than lying. It still received signals just not as strongly as the graphic showed.

No, in October 2008 with iPhone OS 2.1 they jacked up the bars to show better reception than it was receiving, because of all the complaints then about how the iPhone had worse reception. That is lying. Now that they are caught, they conveniently forgot that fact... and they are "shocked" that their algorithm they implemented in 2008 was wrong... that too is lying (can a corporation forget what it previously said and did?). Apparently, only fanbois forget those kind of shenanigans.

If you want to read a real in-depth review of the iPhone 4, check out Anandtech's review:
Apple's iPhone 4: Thoroughly Reviewed
Anandtech leaves out the moonbeam and praises where praise is due, and critiques where critique is due.
The bottom line on the antenna, from Anandtech:
The main downside to the iPhone 4 is the obvious lapse in Apple's engineering judgment. The fact that Apple didn't have the foresight to coat the stainless steel antenna band with even a fraction of an ounce worth of non-conductive material either tells us that Apple doesn't care or that it simply doesn't test thoroughly enough. The latter is a message we've seen a few times before with OS X issues, the iPhone 4 simply reinforces it. At the bare minimum Apple should give away its bumper case with every iPhone 4 sold. The best scenario is for Apple to coat the antenna and replace all existing phones with a revised model. The ideal situation is very costly for Apple but it is the right thing to do. Plus it's not like Apple doesn't have the resources to take care of its customers.

Friend of mine on IRC has some clear stick on decal material which he’s fixed a number of the affected phones with. All that’s needed is to cover up the strip so the user’s hands don’t ground it out.
(No, the tagline change isn’t about you or this thread...I’d been meaning to for a couple days and kept forgetting)

The author states, "The iPhone 4 is the first phone with the antenna on the outside of the phone."
...I don't think that's absolutely true. IIRC Nokia did something similar. Apple's innovation, near as I can tell, is to externalize a segmented antenna design with several functions.
Anyone else have information on that?
