Can someone please remind me of this useful trick? Without it, FR can't easily be read. You have to slide the text back and forth each line. Thanks.

Don’t know about iPhones, but my blackberry has a ‘column view’ tab. Surely iPhone has something similar.

After the FR page loads double tap the screen.

Open Freerepublic in Safari. Click the plus at the bottom of the screen and select add to Home Screen

Some web sites, like Drudge, have a narrow view available for people with iPhones, Blackberries, and such. I don’t think that feature exists on FR yet.

The more I read about Iphones, the more I love my 50.00 a month, MetroPCS Caliber.
Handles FR just fine.

Until you find the trick you used previously, here's a solution I have used for other sites which lack a mobile view.
FeedM8.com
Just enter Free Republic's url in the text box labeled "enter a site". Then you'll get a specific link which you use (and bookmark) on your phone to get the compressed view. Or, you can enter your cell number and they will send you the link. Free service and no registration required :)

While I don’t know the trick you are looking for, I do have a great alternative solution.
Get Atomic Web browser from the App Store.
It has an enlarge font feature and you can choose to have it remember to enlarge the font for a site everytime it loads it.
Once you enlarge the font, double tap the articles column and the headlines fit the screen perfectly. When you click the headline, the next page’s post and all the replies also fit the screen.
It is a great Safari replacement, it has tabs and lots of other nice features.
There’s a free version but I liked it so much i bought the paid one.
Oh, one other thing — I first heard about this browser because Rush was talking about it and recommending it on his show!
Hope you like it as much as I do!

Well, I’m not sure why yours is different, but when I view FR on my iPhone, posts fill the screen perfectly. I do not have to scroll to the right because text goes to the edge of the display and then wraps around. I don’t see any settings in Safari or in general settings that would account for this, but it works.
To: Yaelle
Here's another solution: Google Free Republic, and when the Google page comes up, under Options (first paragraph), select Mobile formatted.
Works like a charm.
