A disastrous blunder by England goalkeeper Robert Green cost his side victory as they drew 1-1 with the United States in their Group C opener in Rustenburg on Saturday night.
England were leading 1-0 through a fourth minute Steven Gerrard goal approaching halftime when Clint Dempsey sent in a weak shot from just outside the penalty area.

Don't be foolish. The U.S. league doesn't play for ties, but we're playing an international tournament and have to make allowances. We were ranked 14th in the world; England was 8th; we were outplayed; and we tied them. That's like the War of 1812 in 90 minutes.

England, has much more talent than the US, there’s no debate there. But we really did hold our own out there, and showed we belonged with them.
Yes, we got lucky today, but in the past, just to have a chance we would have needed 3 or 4 breaks, at least now, it just takes one lucky break for us to get a result.

You’re right, I still have hockey on my mind. Go Bears, Go Caps, Go Russia, and down with the Pens and Crybaby Crosby.

The hatred people have for soccer is odd. I don’t like NASCAR but I hardly go into NASCAR threads and tell people how boring it is to watch people making left turns around an oval a few hundred times.

Ties are good. In soccer. Not in FOOTBALL.
Soccer IS football ;). (Association football, to be precise, as opposed to rugby football and American football.)

heh USA have such low expectation of their soccer team that a 1-1 is considered a victory :)
Out of the 32 teams at least a dozen can can win the world cup (if you look at Germany 2006, Italy was the lucky winner but France, Germany or Argentina could've won it as well). A draw against one of the top teams means that you're playing with the top dogs, that you have a shot at actually winning it.

Not sure, I was very young at the time but that's what my mom told me. OH and baseball is still boring and I've watched cricket.

USA have such low expectation of their soccer team that a 1-1 is considered a victory :) #14 ranked United States vs. #8 ranked England. I think a tie was pretty good.
And overall, it is. This is round-robin, everybody plays everybody else, and the number of points you have determines your ranking at the end. Most expected England to win, giving them 3 points and us 0. We both got 1, so now there's a possibility of us getting out of this ahead of England. That becomes important because the second-place of our group probably plays Germany (the team that got 4-0 against Australia yesterday). IOW, they're probably not advancing any farther than that.

I dont like NASCAR but I hardly go into NASCAR threads and tell people how boring it is to watch people making left turns around an oval a few hundred times. I only watch NASCAR for the accidents. Indy (some tracks) and F1 are actually interesting to watch. Of course, rally racing is the most fun of all.
