A disastrous blunder by England goalkeeper Robert Green cost his side victory as they drew 1-1 with the United States in their Group C opener in Rustenburg on Saturday night.

England were leading 1-0 through a fourth minute Steven Gerrard goal approaching halftime when Clint Dempsey sent in a weak shot from just outside the penalty area.

We tied! We tied! What excitement. Maybe the Stanley Cup final should allow ties, or the 7th game of the World Series.
Who won? Nobody did, we tied! Whoo hoo! :)

Ties are good. In soccer. Not in FOOTBALL.

Wonderful. Something else we can think “globally” about.

Those announcers drove me nuts. Sounded Brit but seemed to not like the Brits. Probably Afrikaners. The USA team really did not look like Americans. The dressed in all white was UK and the navy blue was apparently our shining example of American manhood (what no Asians? Hispanics? but we had the obligatory high profile Black dressed in all red - goalie Howard). Then I recalled Chariots of Fire - all white again. Running on the beach. But the high-pitched whine sounded more like an airport tarmac or Indy 500 than a soccer game. They must have has predator drones high over head looking for trouble makers.

US players stand at attention as they listen to anthems during a 2010 World Cup Group C soccer match against England at Royal Bafokeng stadium in RustenburgJune 12, 2010.

Drudge top headline: “SHOCK: USA levels England at world cup”
That sounds like we really drilled them. Bambi would have been on the air instantly if we had actually won. “See this proved BP is guilty!!” Hang them. Hang them all! I am the World!”

heh USA have such low expectation of their soccer team that a 1-1 is considered a victory :)

It is those damn plastic trumpets that the SA fans blow constantly during their games. They seem to have endless wind. Yesterday the stands had 95% South Africans present and the noise was so bad I could barely understand the commentators. One(Ally something) had an impenetrable, Celtic accent and would have been almost incomprehensible even without the horns. Today there were more US and English fans present so it wasn’t so bad.

What WAS bad was the dirty, hockey-like tactics of the English players. They did their best to injure the US stars — Howard and Dempsey took cheap kicks to the ribs and knees to the face and Donovan had to put up with a chippy defender named Milner.

Getting a tie against the likes of England is nothing to sneeze at. And at the end it was the English players who were watching the clock and ready to bail.

Thanks for the Vuvuzela info. It’s more like those long horns the Tibetians use in the Himalayas.

Do you know who the announcers were? Like those clowns on PGA tour.

That Rooney is a great player, but he’d look more at home on a bar stool.

I think USA lucked out. Once we are eliminated we probably won’t hear much more about World Cup and Plugs Joe will return home.

This is actually a GREAT result because England is supposed to have one of the best teams in the tournament. Methinks that the English--not used to playing at the 1,500 meter (4,921 feet) altitude where the stadium in located, were starting to "run on fumes" near the end of the game.

I think the english had more persistent power at the end when the US team stopped attacking because they ran out of energy.
