The Mexican government is opening a satellite consular office on Catalina Island

The Mexican government is opening a satellite consular office on Catalina Island -- a small resort off the California coast with a history of drug smuggling and human trafficking -- to provide the island's illegal Mexican immigrants with identification cards, The Washington Examiner has learned.

The Mexican consular office in Los Angeles issued a flier, a copy of which was obtained by The Examiner, listing the Catalina Island Country Club as the location of its satellite office. It invites Mexicans to visit the office to obtain the identification, called matricular cards, by appointment.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican whose district includes Catalina Island, said handing out matricular cards will exacerbate an already dangerous situation.

"Handing out matricular cards to Mexicans who are not in this country legally is wrong no matter where it's done," he said. "But on Catalina it will do more damage. It's a small island but there's evidence it's being used as a portal for illegals to access mainland California."

Rohrabacher added, "If there were a large number of Americans illegally in Mexico and the U.S. consulate was making it easier

Wow has that changed. Probably have to speak Spanish to get a Govt. job, or any job for that matter.

I wouldn’t take my kids there now either. I enjoyed the ferry over. We were in college and stayed for the day.

Now, we have to worry about Mexican drug cartels growing pot deep in the National forests. There goes the hiking.

I'll tell you, during the summer, when that second ferry is heading back, it's packed will Illegals.

I am not naive, but how can this happen? I thought Catalina was still owned by the Wrigley family. Either way, it's not to big to police by helicopter.

If these illegals are not being detained and deported, I blame Gov. Schwartzeneger, as well as cities like Long Beach, which is where the boats dock.

This office would be in Avalon, private property around there. Wrigley hasn’t had an interest in the island for a long time.

I’m guessing the Consulate is trying to streamline employment for Illegals on the Island. There’s several restaurants, a few hotels, plus I’m sure they work as maid service for dozens of private homes that are rented out as vacation rentals.
It’s not some trafficking scheme.

I see.

I remember going to Catalina Island as a kid with my family, on the glass bottom boat! You could see a lot, the water was very clear. And schools of flying fish on the surface.

First the Chicago Cubs, then Catalina. The Wrigley family can go chew gum!

The water around there is still very clear. It’s all fish sanctuary up close to the island. Still see the occasional billfish and flying fish. Sometimes whales, and usually lots of dolphins.

So there’s an update on the article that says the Consulate has been moved to a Catholic Church on the island. That is even more concerning because of it’s history of running what amounts to an underground railroad for Illegals.

Sure. It would be easy to bring in lots of 'nuns', 'friars', 'monks' etc. Then these fake nuns, etc. just board the big boat to Long Beach, and head for the nearest fake ID shop. I'm sure someone will give them explicit directions. Then import some more 'nuns' and 'monks'.

Of course, that's only IF some in the Catholic Church would DO such a thing.
Why, that's unthinkable, isn't it?

You know, I’ve been sitting here thinking about this and it would be a so damn easy. A 30 to 40 foot sail could carry 10 or 15 plus a two man crew. Boats that size sail from Cabo all the time. Hell they could squeeze in all kinds of drugs too.

As long as the boat pulled in after last call, the town, pier and dock would be dead. They could dingy their cargo up, the church takes care of them with ferry vouchers and bogus ID. The ferry drops off in San Pedro or Long Beach.

Shouldn't the U.S. by now be the one opening the consular office? Or do we still pretend this is part of American territory?
